Job summary

Meta is seeking a Principal Mechatronics Engineer for Reality Labs Research to lead the system architecture and detailed design of advanced robotic hardware. You will own the mechanical implementation and coordinate with controls, electronics, firmware, and validation teams.

The role requires deep first-principles mechanics, cross‑functional collaboration, and the ability to drive manufacturable, repeatable hardware while mentoring other engineers across programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 12+ years of experience developing complex mechanical, robotic, or electromechanical systems and leading multiple teams.
• Experience owning a dynamic hardware system from architecture to hardware validation.
• Expertise in 3D CAD, load paths, structures, joints, bearings, fits, tolerances, manufacturing processes, and assembly.
• Experience applying kinematics, statics, dynamics, and first-principles calculations to mechanisms and actuators.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and detailed design of robotic systems from concepts to prototypes and production-ready hardware.
• Design mechanisms, joints, transmissions, structures, bearings, routing, and precision assemblies with actuator/sensor integration.
• Translate goals into measurable requirements and optimize force, speed, range, accuracy, mass, and thermal performance.
• Model and measure kinematics, loads, inertia, and vibration to improve hardware.
• Build instrumented prototypes and run experiments to explain failures and validate decisions.
• Define mechanical data and interfaces for controls, electronics, firmware, and validation partners.
• Set direction across programs, resolve cross-organizational decisions, and mentor engineers.
