Job description

Sandfire continues to make strong progress toward its goal of being a sustainable mining company and global copper producer of significance and is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX: SFR).

Headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, Sandfire has a demonstrated commitment to the highest safety standards. Our strategy is focused on both near-mine and regional opportunities as we seek to leverage our strategic position in the Iberian Pyrite Belt in Spain and the Kalahari Copper Belt in Botswana and materially increase the life of our modern processing hubs. Sandfire Resources has recently entered an exciting partnership with Havilah Resources to advance the Kalkaroo Copper-Gold Project in South Australia.

We currently have an opening for a Principal Finance, with a strong finance background within mining, to provide support to Sandfires Motheo Operation in Botswana. This is a permanent, full-time role and will be based in our corporate Head Office in Perth.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager – MOTHEO, the Principal Finance role sits within the Motheo operation and is responsible for leading and embedding key finance improvement initiatives across reporting, governance, accounting policy, systems and assurance. This is a varied and highly collaborative role that combines strong technical accounting judgement with practical project delivery, stakeholder engagement and process improvement to strengthen the quality, timeliness and control environment of Motheo Finance.

The successful candidate will have exposure across financial reporting, systems, governance and business transformation, partnering with stakeholders across the Asset to identify opportunities, solve complex challenges and implement sustainable improvements that enhance the way Finance operates.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Lead and deliver strategic finance transformation initiatives, ensuring projects are effectively scoped, governed, executed and embedded into business-as-usual processes.
  • Drive improvements to the Motheo month-end close process, identifying opportunities to reduce timelines, enhance efficiency and improve reporting quality.
  • Finalise, maintain and embed Group accounting policies, providing technical accounting guidance and ensuring consistent application aligned with Group.
  • Provide technical accounting support, including preparation and review of accounting position papers, policy assessments and implementation plans.
  • Strengthen second-line assurance over asset financial reporting through the development of review frameworks, monitoring activities and control improvements.
  • Support the optimisation and governance of finance systems, including Power BI, ERP, Pronto and Anaplan, partnering with Finance and IT teams to improve functionality, data integrity and reporting capability.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, presentations and briefing materials for senior management as required.
  • Build strong relationships across corporate and operational teams to identify opportunities, solve complex problems and deliver sustainable improvements across the Asset.
  • Responsible for coordinating the integration of ERP modules with financial processes and outcomes, ensuring end-to-end business transactions are accurately captured, controlled, and reflected in financial reporting.
  • Acts as the key liaison between Finance and the ERP project team ensuring finance requirements, process design, controls, master data structures and reporting outcomes align with operational and Group requirements.
  • Lead finance business readiness activities, including process documentation, training coordination, user acceptance testing, change adoption and post-implementation stabilisation.
  • Establish and govern finance master data and reporting frameworks, including chart of accounts, cost centres, reporting hierarchies and data quality standards to ensure integrity and consistency across systems.
About you:
  • Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Business undergraduate qualification. CA/CPA qualification preferred
  • Min 8+ years of experience in finance, accounting, reporting, governance, audit, technical accounting, or finance transformation roles, preferably within mining, resources or another complex multi-site environment.
  • Strong understanding of accounting policies, IFRS, financial statements, reporting controls and the practical application of policy requirements in a business environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading finance improvement initiatives, including process redesign, stakeholder engagement, documentation, change adoption and benefits realisation.
  • Experience with month-end close improvement, reporting governance, reconciliations, controls, assurance routines or external audit deliverables.
  • Systems experience with ERP, Anaplan and Power BI (or equivalent)
  • Ability to work effectively across geographically dispersed teams and different cultures.
  • Ability to travel internationally to Botswana from time to time
At Sandfire we value our people and offer a range of benefits and personal development opportunities including:
  • Attractive, market-competitive remuneration package
  • Salary continuance insurance scheme.
  • Corporate health insurance discount.
  • Ongoing professional development opportunities
