Job summary

Queensland Government is seeking a Principal Engineer - Pavement (Asphalt) to independently provide specialist services and advice on asphalt and surface treatments for roads, enabling planning, design, construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure.

The role leads R&D projects, guides technical teams, develops specifications and Austroads documents, and oversees material compliance and prequalification processes for asphalt works across the network.

Responsibilities

In the role of Principal Engineer - Pavement (Asphalt) you will independently provide specialist services and advice related to asphalt and surface treatments for roads so as to facilitate the efficient planning, procurement, selection, design, construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure. You will also be responsible for planning, managing and undertaking research and development projects (including projects in the TMR/NTRO National Asset Centre of Excellence (NACOE) program) in order to independently develop, improve and implement asphalt and surface treatment technologies and technical documents.This work directly supports the delivery of cost effective, sustainable and high- performing transport infrastructure through the implementation of fit-for-purpose and of innovative pavement materials and technologies, providing expert advice to projects being delivered, providing technical governance, and managing critical registration and prequalification functions.Some of your responsibilities will include:- Apply specialist road surfacing and asphalt engineering knowledge to support the planning, design, delivery, maintenance and asset management of road infrastructure. Provide reliable engineering and technical advice about the characterisation, application and performance of asphalt and surface treatments and promote evidence based decision making in line with national and international best practice.- Provide a complete range of consultancy services (e.g. design, investigations and expert advice) relating to asphalt technologies and surface treatments. Guide technical personnel that are evaluating asphalt and surface treatment performance and TMR District and Regional teams that are managing technical risks to support safe, effective, sustainable and cost-efficient pavement outcomes on projects.- Manage and undertake specialist research, including NACoE research and development, and translate findings into practical asphalt and surface treatment solutions. Share learnings through technical reports, papers, presentations, training sessions and workshops.- Provide expert technical advice for governance activities, including reviewing, developing and updating specifications, technical notes and Austroads documents for asphalt materials, pavements and surface treatments. Constructively engage with key internal and external stakeholders as part of these governance activities.- Assess and register compliant asphalt and microsurfacing mixes; coloured and high friction surface treatment products, and asphalt contractor prequalification submissions.
