Job summary

Woolworths Group in Sydney (Eveleigh/Surry Hills) seeks a Principal Data Scientist to architect and deploy enterprise AI on Google Cloud. You will lead a hands-on team, set standards for model evaluation, observability and responsible AI, and work with product partners to deliver high-impact data solutions.

You will spend significant time writing production-grade code, mentoring a squad of data scientists, and communicating ROI and security trade-offs to senior leaders as you shape ambitious AI

Qualifications

• Advanced Python and SQL with large, disparate datasets.
• Proven ability to influence in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
• Tertiary qualifications in statistics, data science, mathematics, or CS; postgraduate study encouraged.

You will lead the technical design, architecture and deployment of enterprise-grade AI systems, supported by a cross functional squad including data scientists, technical product leaders, applied AI engineers and business SMEs working on our Google Cloud platform.Lead the design, development, and deployment of resilient, multi-agent AI workflows and pipelines in GCP.Establish standards for model evaluation, experimentation, observability, and responsible AI practices.Track developments across Google, Anthropic, and open-source models to integrate high-impact capabilities.Spend over half your time writing production-grade code, focusing on prompt design, tool use, and cost control.Mentor a team of data scientists to build a culture of technical rigor, curiosity, and continuous learning.Guide the team through complex architectural decisions while fostering autonomy, ownership, and hiring top talent.Partner with commercial leaders to translate complex business requirements into ambitious strategic roadmaps.Communicate ROI, security considerations, and technical trade-offs effectively to non-technical executive stakeholders.What you'll bringWe are seeking an experienced technical lead to architect and deploy resilient, multi-agent AI systems within our GCP environment. In this role, you will spend over half your time hands-on with production-grade code, setting high standards for model evaluation, observability, prompt design, and cost efficiency. Beyond technical execution, you will mentor a squad of data scientists, championing technical rigor while guiding them through complex architectural choices.
