Job summary

Allura Partners in Sydney is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to own the architecture, build and performance of the on-premises data platform end-to-end.

You'll work directly with the Director of Data and senior technology leaders, shaping data governance and ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL Server, Python and Azure Data Factory, with a strong focus on on-prem capabilities and no people management.

Qualifications

• Senior data engineer with on-premises experience.
• Strong SQL Server performance tuning (T-SQL).
• Hands-on Python for data pipelines.
• Experience with Azure Data Factory orchestration.
• Data governance and data quality focus.
• Comfortable as a senior IC, no people management.

Responsibilities

• Own architecture, build and performance of on-prem data pipelines and databases end to end.
• Design, build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL Server, Python and Azure Data Factory.
• Establish and maintain data governance policies, data quality and integrity across on-prem systems.
• Oversee design, implementation and maintenance of on-prem SQL Server databases.
• Collaborate with technology and operations to align data systems with goals and compliance.

Our client is a privately held healthcare organization, operating clinics & hospitals across Australia. They're undergoing a major technology transformation to reimagine the patient and clinician experience through data, AI and digital innovation.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the Director of Data, this is a senior individual contributor role with no people leadership component. You'll be the primary technical authority within the data function, owning the architecture, build and performance of the business's on-premises data platform end to end, partnering closely with the Director and senior technology leaders.

Duties / Key Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, build and ongoing performance of on-premises data pipelines and databases end to end
• Design, build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL Server, Python and Azure Data Factory
• Establish and maintain data governance policies, monitoring data quality and integrity across on-prem systems
• Oversee design, implementation and maintenance of on-premises SQL Server databases
• Partner across technology and operations to ensure data systems align with organisational goals and compliance standards

Skills and Experience

• Proven senior data engineering experience, ideally with on-premises environments
• Strong hands-on SQL Server expertise, including T-SQL and performance tuning
• Strong Python skills for data engineering and pipeline development
• Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory for orchestration
• Solid ETL/ELT design and delivery experience across the full data lifecycle
• Comfortable as a senior individual contributor, with no interest in people management
• Strong stakeholder and communication skills
