The University of Sydney's School of Aerospace Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Materials Characterisation. This is a full‑time, 12‑month fixed‑term opportunity to contribute to leading edge research within a collaborative, international team.

Qualifications

• a PhD qualification in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Additive Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
• demonstrated expertise in metallic additive manufacturing, including powder bed fusion technologies
• experience in advanced materials characterisation techniques such as SEM, EBSD, TEM, PFIB and atom probe tomography
• strong knowledge of physical metallurgy and microstructure evolution in engineering alloys
• demonstrated success in publishing high-quality research outcomes in leading international journals
• experience in developing and applying experimental methodologies for metallic materials research.

Responsibilities

• undertake experimental research in metallic additive manufacturing, with a focus on powder bed fusion processing of advanced engineering alloys
• investigate processing-microstructure-property relationships using advanced materials characterisation techniques
• conduct microstructural, crystallographic and chemical analysis using state-of-the‑art microscopy and microanalysis facilities
• develop and optimise additive manufacturing process parameters, feedstock preparation and post‑processing methodologies
• collaborate with research students, academic staff and industry partners on multidisciplinary research projects
• disseminate research outcomes through publications in leading journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
