Job summary

One Door Mental Health in Tamworth is seeking a collaborative Peer Practitioner for a fixed-term, full-time role delivering person-centred, short-term distress support to adults 18+. You will use your lived experience to connect with clients, support recovery goals and promote resilience in the DBS STST.

The role emphasises co-design and co-production with service users, and building strong links with community partners to smooth transitions and access to supports.

Qualifications

• Minimum Certificate IV in Mental Health or Peer Work, or equivalent.
• Experience as a peer worker or lived experience in mental health.
• Ability to collaborate and support recovery goals with individuals.

About the Service

Known locally as Side by Side, One Door Mental Health's Distress Brief Support Short-Term Support Team (DBS STST) provides timely, recovery-oriented support for adults aged 18 years and over experiencing periods of heightened distress. The service complements existing clinical and community supports by delivering person-centred, short-term assistance that helps individuals build resilience, strengthen coping strategies, and progress their recovery goals.

About the role

We are seeking a collaborative and insightful Peer Practitioner for fixed term, fulltime opportunity working 38 hours per in the Tamworth. You will act as champions of co-design and lead co-production practices, in practical ways always placing the relationship and service user at the centre of their journey. This is done through working with a person to understand and identify their story, identify how they would like to move towards what is possible in their lives by focusing on relational care.

Key responsibilities

• Utilising effective and appropriate sharing of learnings from personal recovery stories
• Provide peer-based support to people living with mental health concerns by building trust through shared experiences, promoting a hopeful outlook, and offering consistent, empathetic engagement.
• Deliver outreach-based peer support, including visiting clients in community settings and other services, to support engagement, reduce barriers to access, and assist clients to connect with appropriate supports.
• Forge strong links with the DBS STST and community partners to better enable a smooth transition for people we support
• Contribute to a culturally responsive workforce and service environment for staff, service users, family/carers and volunteers from all cultures, genders, sexualities, bodies, abilities, spiritualities, ages and backgrounds

What you’ll bring

• Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) are required in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by ODMH.
• Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/ or Advanced Training, is desirable but not required.
• Has a lived/living experience of mental distress and recovery and understanding of, and ability and willingness to contribute this Lived Expertise in working towards greater organisational impact.
• Experience or ability to acquire skills in understanding needs and working collaboratively to plan wellbeing supports using evidence informed approaches and tools, for example in challenging situations.
