Job description

Step into a pivotal leadership role where you'll shape the future of payroll within one of Australia's most respected organisations.

This is an opportunity to influence strategy, drive transformation, and elevate best-practice payroll performance at scale.

Our client is a leading ASX-listed organisation and firmly recognised as one of Australia's largest and most respected employers, with a significant national footprint and a reputation for operational excellence.

Operating within a highly complex payroll landscape, the business manages large-scale, multi-layered payroll structures governed by intricate awards, EBAs and regulatory requirements. What truly sets them apart is their proactive, forward‑thinking approach to compliance - payroll is not treated as a transactional function, but as a critical, risk‑managed and value‑adding capability within the organisation.

The organisation is currently investing heavily in the ongoing transformation of its Payroll and People & Culture function, with a core focus on modernising systems, streamlining processes and uplifting capability across the team. There is a strong mandate around change management and continuous improvement, with senior leadership committed to evolving payroll into a best‑in‑class, future‑ready function.

You'll be joining a business that prioritises innovation, governance and operational excellence, backed by continued investment in leading technology platforms and best‑practice processes.

Importantly, the organisation also offers an exceptional employee value proposition, including:

  • Highly flexible working arrangements (hybrid/WFH and flexible start & finish times)
  • A culture grounded in trust, accountability and outcomes
  • A genuine focus on employee wellbeing and work‑life balance
Description

This is a strategic position, responsible for overseeing a high‑performing team while driving key initiatives across compliance, transformation and continuous improvement.

Reporting into the Senior Manager - National Payroll, you will play a critical role in setting direction, leading change, and ensuring the payroll function operates with the highest levels of accuracy, governance and efficiency.

  • Provide leadership, coaching and development to the payroll team, building capability and engagement
  • Oversee the end‑to‑end payroll function, ensuring accurate and timely processing
  • Champion a best‑practice compliance framework, ensuring adherence to legislation, awards and internal policies
  • Act as the escalation point for complex payroll matters and provide expert advisory support
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including system enhancements and process optimisation
  • Lead and support payroll‑related projects, audits and transformation initiatives
  • Partner closely with People & Culture, Finance and key stakeholders to align payroll with broader business objectives
  • Contribute to change management across systems, processes and organisational initiatives
Profile

  • Experience delivering continuous improvement and transformation initiatives
  • A proactive approach to compliance, risk and governance
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
