Job summary

Sharp & Carter is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager in Melbourne to own and optimise the Australian payroll function. You will lead a small team, ensure accurate weekly and monthly payroll processing, and maintain compliance with awards and contracts.

You’ll work closely with Finance and HR, oversee payroll tax, superannuation, and audits, and drive process improvements while liaising with senior stakeholders within a dynamic transformation environment.

Qualifications

  • Extensive payroll management experience within a large or complex organisation.
  • Strong leadership and people management capability.
  • Experience leading and developing a small team.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation and compliance.
  • Proven experience interpreting awards, agreements and employment contracts.
  • High-level knowledge of weekly and monthly payroll processing.
  • Experience across payroll and electronic time & attendance systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and produce accurate weekly and monthly payrolls.
  • Lead, support and develop a small payroll team.
  • Interpret and apply awards, agreements and employment contracts.
  • Ensure accurate application of pay rules and employee entitlements.
  • Manage payroll tax, superannuation and statutory compliance.
  • Oversee leave processing and reporting.
  • Coordinate termination payments with relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain payroll system integrity, confidentiality and internal controls.
  • Participate in internal and external audits.
  • Undertake salary analysis and reporting as required.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and efficiencies.
  • Work closely with Finance, HR and other key stakeholders.

Our client is a successful and growing organisation currently undergoing an exciting period of transformation and development.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experiencedPayroll Manager to take ownership of the Australian payroll function and play a key role in ensuring the ongoing accuracy, compliance and efficiency of payroll operations.

Reporting into a senior payroll leader, you will be responsible for managing weekly and monthly payrolls, leading a small team and ensuring payroll procedures, controls and processes remain best practice.

This is a hands-on leadership opportunity suited to someone who enjoys being involved in the detail while also having the opportunity to develop their team, improve processes and influence the broader payroll function.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have extensive payroll management experience within a large or complex organisation, as well as:

  • Extensive experience as a Payroll Manager
  • Strong leadership and people management capability
  • Experience leading and developing a small team
  • Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation and compliance
  • Proven experience interpreting awards, agreements and employment contracts
  • High-level knowledge of both weekly and monthly payroll processing
  • Experience across payroll and electronic time & attendance systems
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Finance or relevant business qualifications highly regarded
  • Workday Payroll & Time Tracking experience advantageous
