Job summary

Qualifications

• AQF Certificate III in Painting and Decorating or equivalent.
• At least 3 years of relevant painting/decorating experience.
• Residential and/or commercial painting experience.
• Strong knowledge of surface preparation and finishing techniques.

Responsibilities

• Erect and safely use ladders, scaffolding and access equipment.
• Protect floors and areas with drop sheets and masking materials.
• Prepare surfaces by removing old paint and finishes.
• Fill holes, repair defects and smooth surfaces before painting.
• Apply coats and finishes to required standards.
• Inspect finished work and perform touch-ups.

We are seeking an experienced Painting Trades Worker who can independently prepare, finish and maintain a variety of interior and exterior surfaces. The position requires practical trade skills, attention to detail and the ability to deliver quality finishes in accordance with project requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Erecting and safely using ladders, scaffolding and other access equipment required for painting works.
• Protecting floors, fixtures, fittings and surrounding areas using drop sheets, masking materials and other protective coverings.
• Preparing surfaces by removing old or deteriorated paint, wallpaper and other existing finishes.
• Filling holes and cracks, repairing minor surface defects, and smoothing, sanding and sealing surfaces before painting.
• Preparing timber and other surfaces as required to achieve an appropriate finish.
• Selecting suitable paints, stains, varnishes, primers and other coatings according to the surface and project specifications.
• Mixing and matching paints to achieve required colours, consistency and finishes.
• Applying paints, varnishes, stains and other finishes using brushes, rollers and spray equipment.
• Applying undercoats, primers and finishing coats to interior and exterior building surfaces.
• Hanging wallpaper and other decorative wall coverings, including matching patterns and accurately trimming edges where required.
• Inspecting completed surfaces and carrying out touch-ups or corrective work to achieve a consistent, high-quality finish.
• Cleaning brushes, rollers, spray equipment, tools and work areas after completion of work.
• Maintaining painting tools and equipment in safe and serviceable condition.
• Following workplace health and safety procedures, particularly when working at heights or handling paints, solvents and other materials.
• Coordinating with supervisors and other trades to ensure painting works are completed efficiently and within project schedules.

Skills and Experience

The successful applicant should have:

• AQF Certificate III in Painting and Decorating or a relevant equivalent trade qualification, including appropriate on-the-job training; or
• At least 3 years of relevant painting and decorating experience where relevant experience substitutes for formal qualifications.
• Demonstrated experience in residential and/or commercial painting works.
• Strong knowledge of surface preparation, paint application and finishing techniques.
• Experience using brushes, rollers and spray-painting equipment.
• Ability to mix and match paints and select appropriate coatings for different surfaces.
• Ability to safely use ladders, scaffolding, hand tools and painting equipment.
• Good attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
• Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a construction team.
• Sound understanding of workplace health and safety requirements.
• Relevant registration or licensing where required.
