Job summary

Pitcrew AI, based in Newcastle, designs and ships Autonomous Inspection Systems for mining sites worldwide. The role reports to Head of Hardware Engineering and leads electrical and power system design for AIS, while guiding customer project engineering and field deployment.

You will work hands-on in a small team, develop AutoCAD drawings and Onshape models, mentor engineers, and travel domestically and internationally to sites for testing, reviews and commissioning.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering.
• 5–8 years hardware engineering experience in design, build and commissioning.
• Experience sizing standalone solar and battery systems.
• Working knowledge of low voltage DC design and AS/NZS 3000, 3008, 4509 and 5033.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design of electrical and power systems, preparing drawings and calculations for review and approval.
• Design off-grid solar and battery systems, including DC architecture and PLC logic.
• Produce electrical drawings in AutoCAD and mechanical CAD models in Onshape.
• Lead safety in design including hazard identification and risk assessments.
• Integrate cameras, sensors, RFID, edge computing and remote connectivity.
• Run factory and site acceptance testing and commission systems on site.
• Provide remote and on-site technical support for deployed systems.
• Manage suppliers and contract builders, including non-conformances and corrective actions.
• Own BOMs and design reviews for each deployed unit.
• Mentor engineers and technicians and develop engineering standards.

Pitcrew AI designs and builds Autonomous Inspection Systems (AIS): rapidly deployable, solar-powered trailers and skids that use thermal imaging, computer vision and AI to inspect haul trucks as they drive past, without stopping them. Our systems operate at mine sites globally, including Australia, Asia, Africa and the Americas, for some of the world’s largest mining companies.

The role

You will report to the Head of Hardware Engineering and Operations and lead the design of AIS electrical and power systems. You will also lead customer project engineering, provide technical leadership to engineers, technicians and contractors, and support deployed systems. It is a hands‑on role in a small team, and your designs go straight into the field.

What you’ll do

• Lead the design of electrical and power systems, preparing designs, calculations and drawings for review and approval
• Design off‑grid solar and battery systems, including DC architecture, low voltage design and PLC logic
• Produce and maintain electrical drawings in AutoCAD, including schematics, panel layouts and cable schedules
• Lead safety in design, including hazard identification and risk assessments
• Integrate thermal and optical cameras, sensors, RFID, edge computing and remote connectivity
• Prepare customer interface documents and support customer engineering, cyber security and site-readiness reviews
• Run factory and site acceptance testing, and commission systems on site
• Provide remote and on‑site technical support for deployed systems
• Manage the technical side of suppliers and contract builders, including non‑conformances and corrective actions
• Own the engineering bill of materials, design reviews and configuration records for each deployed unit
• Produce mechanical CAD models and drawings in Onshape, and help develop our next‑generation skid and trailer designs
• Lead technical work packages, and mentor and supervise engineers, technicians and contractors
• Develop and improve engineering standards and practices

About you

• Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
• Five to eight years of hands‑on hardware engineering experience across design, build and commissioning
• Experience designing and sizing standalone solar and battery systems
• Working knowledge of low voltage DC design and AS/NZS 3000, 3008, 4509 and 5033
• Electrical drawing experience in AutoCAD, and mechanical CAD (Onshape or similar)
• Confident working directly with customer engineering teams
• Experience leading technical work packages or projects, and mentoring or supervising others
• Willing to travel domestically and internationally for site visits
• Current driver’s licence, and able to meet client mine-site access requirements, which may include medical and fitness-for-work testing

Highly regarded

• Experience in mining or with heavy mobile equipment
• Experience with off‑grid inverter, charge controller and battery monitoring equipment
• Thermography or thermal imaging
• Python for engineering tools and data analysis
• Effective use of AI tools to speed up engineering analysis, documentation and coding
