Job description

Operations Supervisor – PM Freight Operations

St Marys, NSW | Permanent Full-Time | Monday to Friday | 2:00pm – 11:00pm

Take the next step in your transport leadership career Fuse Recruitment is partnering with a well-established and highly regarded national logistics and freight business to appoint an experienced Operations Supervisor to their afternoon/evening freight operation in St Marys.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Team Leader, Leading Hand or Supervisor from a genuine transport/freight environment to take the next step in their career and move into a broader operational leadership position.

Importantly, this isn’t simply a warehouse supervision role. You will be responsible for the overall flow of the afternoon/evening freight operation, working across people, freight movements, equipment and time‑critical departures to ensure everything stays on track.

There is also a genuine career pathway into Operations Management, with the successful person being developed to take on greater responsibility as they prove themselves.

The Opportunity

Working closely with the PM Operations Manager and another Team Leader, you will help lead an afternoon/evening team of approximately 25 operational staff.

Your focus will be keeping the operation moving — ensuring freight is processed correctly, trailers are loaded and dispatched on time, labour is effectively allocated and any issues are identified and resolved before they impact the night’s operation.

You will be working in a busy express freight environment, where timing, communication and problem‑solving are critical.

The role will suit someone who understands the fundamentals of a transport yard and has experience with linehaul, interstate or regular scheduled freight movements.

What you’ll be responsible for
  • Lead and support the afternoon/evening operational team, providing clear direction and maintaining high standards.
  • Oversee the general flow of freight through the depot and ensure operational priorities are achieved.
  • Coordinate people and equipment movements to keep freight moving efficiently.
  • Ensure trailers are loaded correctly and departures remain on schedule.
  • Work closely with linehaul and other operational stakeholders to manage freight movements.
  • Monitor workload and make decisions around labour allocation as freight volumes change.
  • Manage issues as they arise and find practical solutions before they affect service.
  • Complete operational reporting across relevant systems and platforms.
  • Maintain accurate payroll and workforce information.
  • Ensure safety incidents, injuries, hazards and stop‑work situations are appropriately reported and managed.
  • Reinforce a strong safety culture and ensure team members understand and follow required procedures.
  • Conduct difficult conversations when required and hold people accountable to expected standards.
  • Support training, development and performance management across the team.
  • Work closely with the PM Operations Manager and other Team Leaders to ensure an effective handover and consistent operation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the flow, productivity and overall performance of the depot.
What we’re looking for

The most important thing is genuine freight experience.

We’re looking for someone who understands what happens in a transport yard and has worked around the movement of regular, aggregated and interstate freight.

You will ideally have:
  • Previous experience in transport, freight, express freight or logistics operations.
  • Experience as a Team Leader, Leading Hand, Shift Supervisor or Operations Supervisor.
  • Previous experience working on an afternoon/evening or PM shift.
  • A solid understanding of freight movements and depot operations.
  • Experience with loading trailers and understanding how freight needs to flow to meet scheduled departures.
  • The ability to manage and motivate operational teams in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the resilience to remain calm when things don’t go to plan.
  • Confidence having difficult conversations and addressing performance or behavioural issues when required.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to deal with a range of stakeholders across the operation.
  • A strong understanding of workplace safety and incident reporting.
  • Good computer literacy and the ability to learn and work across multiple operational systems.
  • A current forklift licence is highly regarded.
Why this opportunity?

This is a role for someone who is ready for more responsibility.

You will be joining an established operation with a strong track record and a leadership team that is committed to developing its people. The successful person will have the opportunity to learn the business, build their operational leadership capability and progressively take on greater responsibility.

The long‑term pathway is particularly attractive for someone who wants to move beyond Team Leader/Supervisor level and ultimately progress into Operations Management, with significantly greater earning potential as that progression occurs.

You will also be joining an operation that has invested in its Sydney facilities and is focused on building greater stability and performance across the depot.

The right person will be...

Resilient. Accountable. Practical.

Someone who doesn’t stand back when the operation gets busy.

You will be comfortable making decisions, managing people, solving problems and keeping the team focused on what needs to be achieved. You will have the confidence to address issues when standards aren’t being met while also being someone the team can rely on when things get challenging.

Most importantly, you’ll understand that freight doesn’t stop because there is a problem — you need to find a solution and keep the operation moving.

Interested?

If you’re an experienced freight or transport Team Leader/Supervisor looking for the next step in your career, this could be an excellent opportunity to move into a broader operational leadership role with a genuine pathway towards Operations Management.

Previous transport/freight experience and the ability to work the PM shift are key requirements for this position.
