Job summary

NSW Health in Westmead is seeking an Operations Assistant (Porter) to support perioperative services. The role requires maintaining cleanliness, assisting in patient positioning, and moving beds and trolleys as directed by the nursing and surgical teams.

Applicants should have portering experience in a hospital setting, strong hygiene practices, and the ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends and public holidays.

Qualifications

• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
• Ability to work well in a team and follow directions.
• Experience portering and cleaning in a hospital setting.
• Understanding of infection control standards and isolations.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in a hospital environment.
• Willingness to work a rotating roster including weekends/public holidays.

Responsibilities

• Maintain high cleanliness standards in the Operating Suite, Recovery ward, Middleton and CSSD.
• Assist in Operating Rooms with patient care and positioning as directed by RN/Surgeon/Anaesthetist.
• Support the movement and transport of patients and equipment.
• Contribute to timely and safe patient flow and theatre readiness.

To assist within the Operating Rooms with patient care and positioning as directed by Registered Nurse, Surgeon or Anaesthetist.

• Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal, and ability to relate well and communicate respectfully to line management, colleagues and members of the public.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, supporting others and taking directions from supervisors or other staff as appropriate.
• Demonstrated previous portering and cleaning experience in a hospital setting.
• Ability to perform the physical demands of this position, such as push, or pull mobile waste bins, patient beds and trolleys frequently.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of infection control standards, willing to clean room/areas that have been occupied by patients with possible or confirmed infections.
• Ability to prioritise and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Ability and willingness to work shifts, on a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays.
