Job description

This is a broad-scope IT operations role at the centre of a multi-site technology environment, responsible for the reliability, security, performance, and resilience of hybrid infrastructure spanning on-premises networks, virtualised servers, and cloud platforms. You will own proactive monitoring, preventative maintenance, and optimisation across Cisco switching and wireless, Palo Alto firewalls, VMware vCenter, and a comprehensive Microsoft 365 and Azure estate, while acting as a technical escalation point for the service desk team. The environment also encompasses a range of enterprise security and endpoint management platforms including Okta, Zscaler, TrendMicro, Qualys, Proofpoint, and Intune, giving this role genuine technical breadth across infrastructure, cloud, and cyber security disciplines. You will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, disaster recovery planning, and new site deployments while balancing day-to-day operational responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, configure, implement, and maintain network and system infrastructure across on-premises and cloud environments, including Cisco switching (2960, 3850) and wireless, Palo Alto firewalls (PA3020), VMware vCenter, and Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Own proactive monitoring, preventative maintenance, patching, and lifecycle management across server and endpoint operating systems, including Windows Server environments and HP ProLiant infrastructure, ensuring availability and operational stability against defined SLAs.
  • Implement and maintain security controls, access management, and compliance practices aligned to Victorian Government cyber security frameworks, covering secure configuration, identity lifecycle management, incident response, and monitoring across platforms including Okta, Intune, Qualys, Zscaler, TrendMicro, and Proofpoint.
  • Manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery arrangements using Veeam, Backup Exec, and Windows Server Backup, ensuring resilience and continuity arrangements are implemented, tested, and documented to support organisational preparedness across all sites.
  • Act as technical escalation point for complex incidents and service requests via the ITSM platform, perform root cause analysis on recurring issues, maintain accurate technical documentation, and contribute to infrastructure improvement projects and new site connectivity deployments.
Skills & Experience Required
  • 7 to 10 years of demonstrated experience in network and systems administration across hybrid on-premises and cloud environments, with a tertiary qualification in IT, Computer Science, or a related discipline, plus current industry certifications across Microsoft, VMware, networking, security, or ITIL.
  • Hands-on capability across Cisco enterprise switching and wireless platforms, Palo Alto firewalls, and enterprise networking disciplines including routing, switching, VPN, network segmentation, DMZs, and secure wireless, with strong troubleshooting and performance monitoring skills.
  • Proven experience administering Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Azure AD, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and Intune MDM, alongside virtualisation platforms such as VMware vCenter, and cloud storage and high-availability solutions including HPE Nimble.
  • Demonstrated experience with backup and disaster recovery tools (Veeam, Backup Exec), identity and access management platforms (Okta, MFA, SSO, conditional access, RBAC), and a broad range of security and endpoint tooling, with solid understanding of zero-trust principles and secure-by-design infrastructure practices.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and ITSM process skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences, manage competing operational and project priorities, and maintain high-quality configuration records and technical documentation.
What's in it for You
  • Permanent ongoing position with a competitive salary on offer.
  • Fawkner, Melbourne location, on-site, with cross-site support across the organisation as required.
  • Public sector technology environment with genuine breadth across infrastructure, cloud, cyber security, and endpoint management platforms.
  • High technical variety, spanning Cisco, Palo Alto, VMware, Microsoft 365, Azure, Okta, Zscaler, Qualys, and more, within a stable, purpose-driven organisation.
  • Work within a values-led organisation committed to compassion, integrity, and community service, with a supportive team culture and long-term career stability.
