Job summary

Southern Rural Water is seeking a Multi Skilled Storage Operator to join our Headworks team in the East. You will perform hands-on maintenance, operate mechanical equipment and support the Dam Safety Program with inspections and task execution.

You will join a collaborative team, work occasional weekends, and participate in standby duties outside normal hours, with training provided in dam safety and flood routing to build technical proficiency.

About the Role

Southern Rural Water is seeking a Multi Skilled Storage Operator (MSSO) to join our Headworks team in the East. This is a hands‑on role where you will be out in the field, working with equipment, maintaining our assets and helping keep critical water infrastructure operating safely and reliably.

Working alongside an experienced and collaborative team, you will support SRW’s Dam Safety Program by monitoring dam performance, conducting inspections and identifying issues that may require attention. You will also undertake a range of hands‑on operational and maintenance tasks, including maintaining sites and recreational facilities, operating and repairing mechanical equipment, and carrying out general groundskeeping and landscaping duties.

The MSSO plays an important role in incident management at our headworks sites, including supporting flood routing operations. SRW will provide training, including dam safety and flood routing, to help you develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in the role.

The position involves participating in a roster covering a set number of weekends each year, as well as undertaking standby duties outside normal working hours to support operational requirements. We are looking for someone who has mechanical aptitude, safety focused and works collaboratively when responding to changing conditions.

As the Multi Skilled Storage Operator, some of your responsibilities will include:

• Complete maintenance tasks in line with set programs and procedures for gated and fixed crest structures.


• Maintain the safe operation and management of all SRW Headwork structures.


• Undertake visual inspections and monitoring of dam assets as set out in SRWs Visual Inspection Regime.


• Contributing to incident management and emergency response activities, including the routing of floods and other events at SRW structures.


• Participate in standby duties, which may include responding to calls and alarms, managing enquiries related to headworks assets, setting critical water flows, and reporting emergency trigger points.

About you

The successful candidate for this position will be able to demonstrate some of the desired experience and abilities below:

• Ability operating and maintaining mechanical equipment, as well as performing general maintenance and groundskeeping duties such as mowing and spraying.
