Job summary

DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE ACTION in Melbourne seeks a Technical Officer in Molecular Genetics to support crop research and breeding projects. You will conduct high-throughput DNA extraction, processing, genotyping and data management, contributing to reliable molecular data for crop improvement programs.

The role requires strong lab skills, collaboration, and meticulous record keeping, with a focus on safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Excellent knowledge of genetics/genomics laboratory methods including genomic DNA isolation and next-generation DNA genotyping/sequencing.
• Experience in a high-throughput laboratory using molecular genetics techniques and liquid handling robotics.
• Ability to plan, resource, and manage tasks across multiple activities to meet timelines.
• Ability to troubleshoot, optimise workflows, and quality-check genotyping data to improve lab efficiency and outcomes.
• Strong collaboration skills with researchers, stakeholders and team members; mentoring and positive team culture.
• Excellent attention to detail and comprehensive electronic record keeping, and commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
• Experience genotyping with Infinium SNP BeadChip assays and working with grain crops.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-throughput molecular genetics assays including DNA extraction, genotyping and sequencing.
• Maintain accurate lab records and manage data in electronic databases.
• Troubleshoot and develop new assays and workflows; ensure quality control of data.
