Job summary

DEECA is seeking a Technical Officer in Molecular Genetics to support research and breeding projects for Victoria's agriculture. You will perform high-throughput DNA extraction, sample processing and genotyping, and manage data in a collaborative team environment.

The role requires strong knowledge of genetics/genomics, experience with sequencing technologies, and the ability to troubleshoot workflows. Hybrid work arrangements are offered, with a fixed-term 12-month appointment at AgriBio,

Qualifications

• Excellent knowledge and experience in laboratory methods for genetics and genomics, with emphasis on genomic DNA isolation, next-generation DNA genotyping and sequencing technologies.
• Demonstrated experience and efficiency in a high sample throughput laboratory in which a range of molecular genetics and genomics techniques were applied, including the use of liquid handling robotics.
• Demonstrated ability to plan work, manage resourcing, organise tasks and work across multiple activities in parallel to achieve high quality outcomes within agreed timelines.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, optimise and improve molecular genetics and genomics workflows, including genotyping and sequencing methodologies, and undertake technical analysis and quality control of genotyping data to enhance laboratory efficiency, data quality and scientific outcomes.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, stakeholders and team members, including experience contributing to mentoring colleagues and fostering a positive team culture.
• Strong attention to detail and record keeping skills, including experience in maintaining electronic databases.
• Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety, regulatory compliance and cultural safety.
• Experience genotyping with Infinium SNP BeadChip assays and working with grain crops.

Responsibilities

• Undertake high-throughput laboratory activities, including DNA extraction, sample processing and genotyping.
• Manage associated data and maintain accurate laboratory records.
• Contribute to method development and troubleshooting for new assays and laboratory workflows.
• Support a safe laboratory environment and collaborate effectively within a team.
