Job summary

Astron Limited is recruiting a Mine Surveyor for the Donald Project in Victoria. This hands-on, site-based role focuses on survey planning, field data collection, processing and conformance to mine designs, with evolving duties as operations mature.

You will collaborate with production teams, contractors and technical staff to ensure accurate surface modelling, stockpile surveys and 3D machine control data, while maintaining QA/QC and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Diploma/Advanced Diploma or bachelor’s degree in surveying, geospatial engineering or a similar discipline.

• Willingness to obtain a Construction Induction White Card, if not already held.
• Ability to meet site medical and fitness requirements, including drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

• Develop daily and weekly survey plans aligned with mine planning, dig sequencing, construction activities and tailings requirements.
• Conduct field surveys using GNSS RTK, total stations, laser scanners and UAVs.
• Survey topography, stockpiles, pit walls, haul roads, ponds and infrastructure associated with mining, processing, construction or farming activities.
• Set out designs, including pit limits, berms, batter lines, dozer trap infrastructure, stockpile footprints, slurry and water lines, tailings spigots, dewatering bores, fences and roads.
• Maintain and verify survey control networks, benchmarks and calibration baselines.
• Create, upload and monitor 3D machine control files for GPS-equipped mobile equipment, including calibration and troubleshooting with operators as required.
• Convert mine plans into survey set outs for operational execution and validate as-built surveys against mine designs, engineering drawings and regulatory tolerances.
• Process survey data to produce surfaces, contours, sections, volume reports and spatial files (CSV, LandXML, DXF/DWG).
• Establish an auditable end-of-period survey procedure for contractual requirements, calculations, reporting and filing/storage.
• Be the gatekeeper for all site GIS data, ensuring spatial information is accurate, current, quality-controlled.

Help deliver accurate survey data and practical field support on a major new Victorian rare earth and mineral sands project.

The Donald Rare Earth and Mineral Sands Project is a tier-1 rare earth and mineral sands resource located within the Wimmera District of Western Victoria near the towns of Minyip and Donald and 70 kilometres from the large regional city of Horsham The project is a joint venture between ASX-listed Astron Corporation Limited – a mining and processing company with more than 30 years’ experience in mineral sands processing, technology and downstream product development - and US-based critical minerals company Energy Fuels Incorporated.

Astron Limited is seeking a Mine Surveyor to join the Donald Project. This is a hands-on, site-based role where the initial focus will be the Project Construction, transitioning to ongoing mining operations as the project matures. You will provide accurate and timely surveying of spatial data to support safe and efficient construction works, mineral sands mining, tailings deposition and progressive rehabilitation.

Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, you will play an important role in delivering end-to-end surveying services, including survey planning, field capture, data processing, reporting and design conformance support. Your work will support dig sequencing, grade control, infrastructure set out, statutory compliance and continuous improvement across pit, plant, tailings and rehabilitation areas.

In this role, you will

Develop daily and weekly survey plans aligned with mine planning, dig sequencing, construction activities and tailings requirements. Conduct field surveys using GNSS RTK, total stations, laser scanners and UAVs.

Survey topography, stockpiles, pit walls, haul roads, ponds and infrastructure associated with mining, processing, construction or farming activities.

Set out designs, including pit limits, berms, batter lines, dozer trap infrastructure, stockpile footprints, slurry and water lines, tailings spigots, dewatering bores, fences and roads.

Maintain and verify survey control networks, benchmarks and calibration baselines.

Perform equipment checks, calibrations and control validation before fieldwork.

Create, upload and monitor 3D machine control files for GPS-equipped mobile equipment, including calibration and troubleshooting with operators as required.

Pick up drill hole collars for exploration and grade control drilling programs.

Convert mine plans into survey set outs for operational execution and validate as-built surveys against mine designs, engineering drawings and regulatory tolerances.

Support excavator and dozer trap mining operations, tailings deposition planning, infrastructure relocation and rehabilitation earthworks.

Process survey data to produce surfaces, contours, sections, volume reports and spatial files such as CSV, LandXML and DXF/DWG outputs.

Maintain accurate, auditable survey records, master survey files, stockpile databases, version control and QA/QC checks.

Establish a transparent, auditable end-of-period survey procedure for contractual requirements, calculations, reporting and filing/storage.

Be the gatekeeper for all site GIS data, ensuring spatial information is accurate, current, quality-controlled, securely maintained and appropriately released.

Work closely with production teams, earthworks contractors, environmental, HSE and technical teams to ensure survey work is well planned, safely completed and accurately documented.

About you

Required experience

Approximately 3–5+ years’ experience in mine surveying, heavy civil surveying, construction surveying or a similar field-based technical role.

Strong practical capability using GNSS RTK, total stations, laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry.

Experience with survey data processing, surface modelling, volume calculations, set out creation and machine control file preparation.

Confidence working in open-cut, construction or contractor-managed environments, including coordinating multiple work fronts safely.

Practical understanding of mine planning, haul road design, dig block sequencing, grade control support and design conformance.

Strong written, verbal and graphical reporting skills, including plans, survey reports, databases, spreadsheets and spatial data outputs.

Practical risk management skills, including control verification, safe field practices, incident investigation awareness and clear communication of hazards or changes.

Required qualifications

Highly regarded

Experience in mineral sands, rare earths, open-cut mining, tailings deposition, dozer trap mining methods or heavy earthworks environments.

Experience using software such as Civil 3D, 12d, Micromine, Surpac, Vulcan, Deswik, Trimble Business Center, Leica Infinity, Pix4D, DroneDeploy, Metashape, ArcGIS or similar systems.

CASA RePL or experience with UAV survey workflows.

Current cadastral survey licensing or eligibility for professional membership such as SSSI.

Awareness of Victorian OHS obligations, mining risk management requirements and survey contributions to compliance or rehabilitation reporting.

ICAM team member training or incident investigation experience.

The details

This is a permanent full-time role based at our mine site approximately 14 kilometres east of Minyip, Victoria. The role generally works Monday to Friday, 38 hours per week, with additional hours from time to time to support site and project requirements. It will suit someone who enjoys a mix of fieldwork, technical accuracy, data processing, contractor coordination and practical problem solving.
