Job summary

South St Paul Public Schools in Middle School is seeking a Special Education Assistant to provide direct support for students with disabilities, assist with daily living needs, and help implement instructional and behavioral plans within IEP guidelines.

The role includes help with arrival/dismissal, self-care tasks, data collection, collaboration with teachers, and ensuring a safe, inclusive learning environment. This is a non-exempt, hourly position at $25.61 per hour with benefits.

  • Support specialized programs (e.g., SUN, EBD) as directed
  • Follow IEPs and BIPs with fidelity
  • Ensure safety during recess and unstructured activities
  • Record data and assist with assessments and progress reports
  • Maintain documentation related to IEP services and billing
  • Collaborate with teachers and case managers to coordinate services
  • Attend trainings and adhere to district policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Position Title: Special Education Assistant
Department: South St Paul MS
Immediate Supervisor's Position Title: Building Principal
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $25.61 per hour
General Summary of Purpose of Job:
Provide direct support to students receiving special education services by assisting with daily living needs, implementing instructional and behavioral plans, and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment in alignment with IEPs and district guidelines.

Job Functions
  • Assist students during arrival and dismissal, including bus loading/unloading, transitions to/from class, and supervision on transportation as required by IEPs.
  • Support students with self-care needs such as toileting, dressing, eating, and other activities of daily living as directed by the case manager.
  • Monitor student behavior across settings and implement appropriate interventions to address behavioral, social, or safety concerns.
  • Assist in delivering instruction by supporting learning activities and implementing modifications or accommodations as directed by special education staff.
  • Provide support within specialized programs (e.g., SUN, EBD), assisting with teacher-directed tasks and student interventions.
  • Follow and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) with fidelity.
  • Ensure student safety and appropriate social behavior during recess, playground, and other unstructured activities.
  • Collect and record data, assist with administering assessments, and document student progress toward academic and behavioral goals.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to IEP services, third-party billing, progress reports, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate and collaborate with teachers, case managers, and team members to coordinate services and support student success.
  • Participate in required training, adhere to district policies and procedures, maintain regular attendance, foster inclusive relationships, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

Constantly required to move and interact with students including standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling and reaching with hands and arms. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, lift, use hands for fingering, grasping and feeling, wrists, hands and/or fingers for repetitive motions or computer use. The employee must frequently lift, move and/or carry up to 30 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to and over 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
