Job summary

South St Paul MS is seeking a Special Education Assistant to support students with disabilities at Middle School. The role involves supervising arrival/dismissal, assisting with self-care tasks as directed by case managers, and helping implement IEP/BIP-driven instructions.

You will assist with instructional support, data collection, and progress documentation while maintaining confidentiality and collaborating with teachers and families to promote student success.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students during arrival and dismissal, including bus loading/unloading and supervision.
  • Support students with self-care needs per IEPs.
  • Monitor student behavior and implement interventions.
  • Assist in delivering instruction with modifications or accommodations.
  • Support specialized programs (e.g., SUN, EBD) and interventions.
  • Follow IEPs and BIPs with fidelity.
  • Ensure safety and appropriate social behavior during recess and unstructured activities.
  • Collect data, assist with assessments, and record progress toward goals.
  • Maintain records related to IEP services, billing, and progress reports.
  • Communicate with teachers, case managers, and team members to coordinate services.
  • Participate in trainings, follow policies, maintain attendance, and foster inclusive relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Overview

Position Title: Special Education Assistant (4 Positions). Location: Middle School. Department: South St Paul MS. Immediate Supervisor: Building Principal. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt. Salary Range: $25.61 per hour.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students during arrival and dismissal, including bus loading/unloading, transitions to/from class, and supervision on transportation as required by IEPs.
  • Support students with self-care needs such as toileting, dressing, eating, and other activities of daily living as directed by the case manager.
  • Monitor student behavior across settings and implement appropriate interventions to address behavioral, social, or safety concerns.
  • Assist in delivering instruction by supporting learning activities and implementing modifications or accommodations as directed by special education staff.
  • Provide support within specialized programs (e.g., SUN, EBD), assisting with teacher-directed tasks and student interventions.
  • Follow and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) with fidelity.
  • Ensure student safety and appropriate social behavior during recess, playground, and other unstructured activities.
  • Collect and record data, assist with administering assessments, and document student progress toward academic and behavioral goals.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to IEP services, third-party billing, progress reports, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate and collaborate with teachers, case managers, and team members to coordinate services and support student success.
  • Participate in required training, adhere to district policies and procedures, maintain regular attendance, foster inclusive relationships, and perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Constantly required to move and interact with students including standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling and reaching with hands and arms. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, lift, use hands for fingering, grasping and feeling, wrists, hands and/or fingers for repetitive motions or computer use. The employee must frequently lift, move and/or carry up to 30 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to and over 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
