Job summary

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is expanding its Digital Product team in Sydney to build and maintain ABC’s Android applications, delivering secure, accessible and high-performing mobile experiences for audiences across Australia.

You will work with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, contribute to the product roadmap, and collaborate with senior engineers and product teams to deliver features and enhancements at scale.

Qualifications

• Advanced Android development skills with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
• Experience with modern Android frameworks and development tools.
• Experience with automated testing (unit, integration, E2E).
• Experience with CI/CD, release pipelines and production monitoring.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the ABC's Digital Product team and help build Android applications used by audiences across Australia.

As an Android Engineer, you'll contribute to the development, maintenance and support of the ABC's mobile applications, working closely with senior engineers, technical leads and the broader product team. You'll develop new features and reusable components, solve production issues and help deliver secure, accessible and high-performing Android experiences.

You'll work with modern Android technologies and established engineering practices while continuing to build your technical capability across large-scale, public-facing digital products.

• Develop features and reusable components across the ABC's Android applications, working closely with senior engineers and the broader product team.
• Deliver technical solutions aligned with the team's long-term technical roadmap, with a focus on performance, security, accessibility and maintainability.
• Collaborate on the planning and delivery of major product features, taking ownership of work within your area of responsibility.
• Identify, investigate and resolve production issues while contributing to continuous improvements across ABC mobile applications.
• Contribute to automated testing, CI/CD, release processes, production monitoring and high-quality technical documentation.
• Stay across Android development best practice and emerging tools and frameworks, identifying opportunities to improve products and development practices.

What You'll Bring

• Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent significant skills, knowledge and experience.
• Significant experience building scalable, secure, accessible and high-performing applications across mobile platforms and devices.
• Advanced Android development skills, ideally demonstrated through public-facing applications developed in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
• Experience assessing and working with modern Android frameworks, development tools and technologies.
• Experience with automated testing, including unit, integration and end-to-end testing, with a strong focus on building quality into the development process.
• Experience with mobile release processes, including CI/CD, automation pipelines, feature flags and production monitoring.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with demonstrated technical ownership and the ability to deliver outcomes effectively.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise work and communicate progress and challenges clearly.
