Job summary

NSW Health Pathology’s Genetics Laboratory at Randwick invites a Medical Laboratory Technician to join the Molecular and Cytogenetics team. You will perform a range of specialized genetic tests and work at the forefront of diagnostics.

You'll gain exposure to karyotyping, FISH, microarray and sequencing, contributing to quality management and collaborating with clinicians to guide patient care. This is a permanent full-time role requiring a Diploma in Laboratory Technology and bench experience.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Laboratory Technology or equivalent with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a range of operational laboratory activities; coordinate and provide scientific/technical training; review, develop and quality‑manage laboratory practices to meet standards and continual improvement.

You'll work alongside expert scientists and clinical teams, gaining exposure to a broad range of advanced technologies and assays, including karyotyping, FISH, microarray and sequencing techniques spanning single genes to whole exomes. What You'll Be Doing

Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities including the coordination and provisions of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.

  • Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a Molecular and Cytogenetics department, including demonstrated technical bench experience involving genetic testing
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  • Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  • Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  • Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  • Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
