Job summary

Cement Australia invites applications for a Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship in Tasmania. You will train across fixed plant and equipment and learn to maintain conveyors, pumps, and gearboxes while developing hands-on skills in machining, welding, and safety.

The program is fully supported by Cement Australia, with paid time off for study, tools and PPE provided, and a national trade qualification. Start around late January 2027, joining a team committed to safety, learning, and career growth.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Year 11 with passes in Maths and English.
  • Enrolled in or completed Cert I or II Engineering.
  • Good communication and teamwork.
  • Genuine interest in your chosen trade.

Responsibilities

  • Work on fixed plant and equipment including conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, crushers, ball mills, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Carry out tasks in workshop and production plant environments.
  • Operate lathes and other machining equipment to manufacture components prior to assembly and fitting.
  • Perform welding using TIG, MIG, and MMA techniques.
  • Safely use hand tools and electrical/pneumatic powered tools.
  • Undertake routine preventive maintenance activities.
  • Respond to breakdowns and apply fault-finding skills.
  • Use CMMS for work orders and record keeping.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings and pre-start risk assessments.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Uphold safety standards and procedures.

Our Apprentices are an important part of our cement manufacturing operations. We pride ourselves on developing you as a talented tradesperson both technically and professionally over the duration of your apprenticeship. Our program will not only prepare you to be a multi-skilled Mechanical Fitter but also support you in nurturing those life skills that help you become a more well-rounded individual.

So, what does a Mechanical Fitter at Cement Australia do?

  • Work on a wide variety of fixed plant and equipment including conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, crushers, ball mills, hydraulics, and pneumatics
  • Carry out tasks in both workshop and production plant environments
  • Operate lathes and other machining equipment to manufacture components prior to assembly and fitting
  • Perform welding using TIG, MIG, and MMA techniques
  • Safely and effectively use hand tools, as well as electrical and pneumatic powered tools and equipment
  • Undertake routine preventive maintenance activities
  • Respond to breakdowns and apply strong fault-finding skills to resolve issues
  • Use Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for work orders and record keeping
  • Actively participate in toolbox meetings and pre-start risk assessments
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Apply and uphold safety standards and procedures at all times

What You’ll Bring

  • You have completed or are currently completing a minimum Year 11 with passes in Maths and English
  • You ideally are enrolled in or have completed Cert I or II Engineering able to demonstrate a strong mechanical aptitude
