Job summary

Captain Cook Cruises Sydney, part of Journey Beyond, is seeking an experienced Mechanic All Rounder to keep our fleet safe and ready to sail on Sydney Harbour.

You will diagnose, repair and maintain marine diesel engines and related equipment, plan your own work, and coordinate with the marine team to ensure on-time operations while upholding safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Certificate III in mechanical trade is essential.
• Marine diesel or Scania experience is highly preferred.
• Ability to plan own work and own repairs.
• Maintain tidy records and communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair and maintain marine diesel engines, generators and vessel systems.
• Perform planned and preventative maintenance to keep vessels safe and on schedule.
• Respond quickly to breakdowns and faults to get vessels back in service.
• Plan and prioritise workload, document work orders, parts and labour in MEX.
• Manage parts inventory and communicate needs to the team.
• Collaborate with vessel crews to understand issues and keep operations on schedule.
• Maintain clean, safe workshop areas and report hazards.
• Identify reliability improvements to care for the fleet.

About The Role

Every great day on Sydney Harbour starts in the workshop. As our Mechanic All Rounder, you’ll keep the Captain Cook Cruises fleet – including The Jackson, Sydney 2000 and Starship Sydney – safe, reliable and ready to sail.

This is a role for a mechanic who loves variety and is trusted to get on with the job. One day it’s a planned service, the next it’s chasing down a fault before the afternoon cruise. You’ll plan your own work, make the call on repairs, and see jobs through from first spanner to sign-off – with the backing of a maintenance team that values craftsmanship, safety and pride in the job.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Diagnosing, repairing and maintaining marine diesel engines, generators, pumps, hydraulics and other vessel machinery
• Carrying out planned and preventative maintenance to keep vessels safe, compliant and on schedule
• Responding quickly to breakdowns and defects – working independently to get vessels back in service
• Planning and prioritising your own workload, balancing urgent repairs against scheduled maintenanceRecording work orders, defects, parts and labour accurately in MEX
• Managing parts and workshop inventory, and letting the team know what needs ordering
• Working with vessel crews and the marine team to understand issues and keep operations running to schedule
• Keeping the workshop and work areas safe, tidy and organised
• Following safe work practices and reporting hazards, incidents and near-misses
• Looking for ways to improve reliability, and caring for the company’s vessels as if they were your own

About You

You’re an experienced, qualified mechanic who’s happiest with a problem to solve and a job to own. You’ve spent enough time around engines to trust your diagnosis, know when to ask for backup, and get the work done properly without someone looking over your shoulder. You keep tidy records, communicate clearly, and you’re as comfortable working through a planned service as you are dropping everything for an urgent breakdown on a busy day.

Marine diesel or Scania experience will set you apart – but if you’re a diesel or heavy vehicle mechanic ready to trade the highway for the harbour, we’d love to hear from you.
