The Academic team you will be joining is the heart and soul of Matrix. You will be in the engine room, delivering exceptional instruction at scale to some of Australia's brightest and most ambitious students.

Position Overview

Matrix's reputation is built one classroom at a time. As we grow across more campuses, we need frontline leaders who make sure that holds true everywhere, every week. You will report to and support the Faculty Lead who has overall ownership for the performance, reputation and strategy for your faculty. You may support in all those areas depending on need and aptitude, however, your primary role will be to own the educational standard and the student outcomes of a cohort of teachers and students (i.e. a portion of the Faculty you are in). This means observing lessons, coaching teachers, and catching problems before they show up in a student's results including making targeted interventions.

We're looking for someone who genuinely loves the craft of teaching and is energised by helping others grow into exceptional educators.

You'll own teaching quality, student outcomes and staff development across your assigned cohort, reporting to the Mathematics Faculty Lead. That means running observation cycles, delivering coaching, screening and onboarding new casual teachers, and being the first point of academic escalations and intervention. You will also be a key driver of insight and planning for our Curriculum Development team on ways to improve our teaching materials. If you have interest and aptitude you may also contribute to curriculum development yourself.

This is a people leadership role from day one. You'll keep teaching too, approximately six hours a week, to stay connected to the classroom and credible with the people you're coaching. The role inevitably includes some weekend work, because that's when most of our students and casual teaching staff are on campus. Most of the people you coach are casual staff building their teaching careers alongside study or other work, so the coaching needs to meet them where they are: practical and encouraging, not academic theory. Ultimately, this is an outcome-driven leadership role and the exact schedule you will adopt will be driven by you in consultation with your manager in a way that drives outcomes and works for you.

You don't need prior formal management experience. At Matrix you will receive training and we are looking for people who view people management as the next step in their career journey. What you need is credibility as a teacher and a genuine instinct for coaching, so that teachers trust your feedback and want to get better because of it.

Key responsibilities & outcomes

1. Teaching quality and team capability

• Run regular classroom observations across your assigned campuses, tracking development for every casual teacher.
• Deliver practical, one-on-one coaching that improves lesson pacing, questioning technique and student engagement, and moves SEQ (Student Experience Questionnaire) and NPS scores.
• Screen and onboard new casual teachers so they're classroom-ready fast.
• Maintain an approachable, high-trust presence that casual staff come to for guidance, keeping satisfaction and retention high.
• Teach at least six hours a week, modelling the standard you're coaching to.

2. Student outcomes and experience

• Monitor quiz data and attendance to catch disengagement early, before it shows up in results.
• Run small-group and individual interventions that get at-risk students back on track.
• Review SEQ data and direct immediate coaching adjustments where delivery gaps show up.
• Handle routine parent and student check-ins in a way that keeps families confident in their child's progress.
• Act as the first escalation point for student behavioural issues on campus.
• Prepare casual teachers thoroughly on course delivery so materials are used consistently and well.
• Collect structured feedback from teachers and students and give the Faculty Lead and Curriculum Development team clear, useful input.
• Support the rollout of updated theory books, digital tools and assessment formats without disrupting delivery.

4. Faculty strategy and growth

• Assist the Faculty Lead and/or Head of Academic in planning and proposing structural changes to our academic products. This could include in-term adjustments all the way to multi-term/year changes to our programs to better fit our student needs and market demand.
• Maintain a visible, supportive academic presence on campus as needed.
• Contribute to and lead activities (e.g. academic workshops, masterclasses and open days) that support enrolment targets.
• Feed ground-level intelligence on demand, room dynamics and campus logistics back to the Faculty Lead.

Experience and qualifications

Coaching craft and classroom instinct

This is the heart of the role, so it matters more than years of management experience. We're looking for someone who can spot what's not working in a lesson within minutes, and who knows how to say so in a way that changes what happens in the next lesson.

• A track record of giving feedback that teachers act on, not just receive.
• Quick, practical judgement under pressure, particularly with at-risk students.
• Genuine warmth that makes casual staff feel supported, not surveilled.
• Comfort with a roster built around when students and casual staff are actually on campus, including weekends.
