Job summary

Bucher Municipal in Melbourne is seeking a Manufacturing Design Engineer to join our Scoresby team, focusing on improving fabrication processes through Design for Manufacture (DFM), robotic welding, and the development of jigs and fixtures for production.

You will work with Engineering, Design and Manufacturing teams to analyse existing processes, design fixtures, and implement practical solutions on the factory floor to enhance efficiency, quality and repeatability.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Mechatronic disciplines.
• Experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
• Strong design capability for sheet metal and machined steel components.
• Experience designing welding jigs, fixtures or tooling.
• Knowledge of MIG welding, weld sequencing and distortion control.
• Experience with process improvement, time studies or root cause analysis.

Responsibilities

• Analyse fabrication processes to improve efficiency, quality and productivity.
• Develop Design for Manufacture improvements for robotic welding.
• Design welding jigs, fixtures and tooling including clamping systems.
• Design sheet metal and machined steel components for manufacturing.
• Develop work instructions, SOPs and process documentation.
• Conduct process mapping, time studies and root cause analysis.
• Support commissioning, troubleshooting and optimisation of robotic welding systems.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Design and Manufacturing teams to deliver practical solutions.
• Identify opportunities to reduce costs, waste and manufacturing time.
• Investigate manufacturing issues and support NCRs.

About the Role

This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll work closely with our Engineering, Design and Manufacturing teams to improve fabrication processes and introduce smarter, more efficient manufacturing solutions.

You’ll have a particular focus on Design for Manufacture (DFM), robotic welding, jigs and fixtures, helping us improve efficiency, quality and repeatability across our manufacturing operations.

From analysing an existing process and identifying an opportunity for improvement, through to designing a fixture and seeing it implemented on the factory floor — you’ll have the opportunity to make a real impact.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyse fabrication processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality and productivity
• Develop and implement Design for Manufacture (DFM) improvements, particularly for robotic welding applications
• Design and develop welding jigs, fixtures and tooling, including automated and pneumatic clamping systems
• Design sheet metal and machined steel components for manufacturing applications
• Develop work instructions, SOPs and process documentation
• Conduct process mapping, time studies and root cause analysis
• Support the commissioning, troubleshooting and optimisation of robotic welding systems
• Work closely with Engineering, Design and Manufacturing teams to develop practical production solutions
• Identify opportunities to reduce costs, waste and manufacturing time
• Investigate manufacturing issues and support Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)

About You

• A degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Mechatronic Engineering or a similar discipline
• Engineering experience within a manufacturing or fabrication environment
• Strong design capability across sheet metal and machined steel components
• Experience designing welding jigs, fixtures or tooling
• A good understanding of welding processes, particularly MIG welding, weld sequencing and distortion control
• Experience with process improvement, time studies or root cause analysis
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• The ability to work collaboratively across Engineering, Manufacturing and Production
• Experience with robotic welding, automation or pneumatic systems will be highly regarded.
