Manager, Organisational Capability & Performance

Location: Sydney, NSW, AU, 2000 #job-location.job-location-inline { display: inline; } – Sydney NSW

3d ago , from Department of Communities and Justice NSW

We stand beside people when they need it most.

At Legal Aid NSW, fairness isn’t just a legal principle, it shapes everything we do - our culture, our services, our workplace and our decisions.

Since 1979, Legal Aid NSW has provided legal advice, support and representation in criminal, family and civil law, helping people across NSW navigate hardship and complex legal issues. Our work is challenging, but deeply meaningful.

In partnerships with LawAccess NSW, Community Legal Centres and the Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT, we are located throughout the state including our Central Sydney office, 25 regional offices, and satellite and outreach offices.

We are modernising People & Culture

Legal Aid NSW is modernising how People & Culture works. We are building a more connected and responsive service model, using better technology, clearer service pathways and stronger insights to make HR simpler, more consistent and easier to access for employees and leaders.

About the Role

The Manager, Organisational Capability & Performance leads Legal Aid NSW’s enterprise approach to organisational capability, leadership development, performance, and respectful workplace practice. As the leader of a newly established function, you will shape the strategies, frameworks and services that strengthen leadership effectiveness, build workforce capability, support high performance, and foster a respectful and inclusive workplace culture.

Operating at both a strategic and operational level, you will partner with senior leaders to identify capability priorities, address cultural and behavioural risks, and implement targeted interventions that drive organisational performance. You will also provide leadership and governance of the Respectful Workplace Support service, ensuring prevention, education and early intervention initiatives are integrated with broader capability and leadership objectives. This role offers a unique opportunity to establish a function with clear purpose, strong professional standards and measurable organisation-wide impact.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Lead and implement Legal Aid NSW’s enterprise organisational capability strategy across learning, leadership development, performance and workplace behaviour.
  • Design, govern and continuously improve organisational capability, leadership and performance frameworks, programs and service standards.
  • Provide strategic leadership of the Respectful Workplace Support service, including prevention initiatives, governance arrangements and escalation pathways.
  • Strengthen manager capability through initiatives that support effective performance management, behavioural leadership, conflict resolution, early intervention and respectful workplace practices.
  • Use workforce data, behavioural trends, service insights and performance metrics to identify organisational risks and inform evidence-based interventions.
  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team while providing expert advice to senior leaders on capability development, leadership effectiveness, workplace behaviour and organisational culture.
About You

You are an experienced and credible people leader who is passionate about building organisational capability, strengthening leadership and fostering a high-performance, respectful workplace culture. You bring the strategic thinking to develop enterprise-wide frameworks and initiatives, while remaining focused on practical implementation and measurable outcomes.

You are comfortable partnering with senior leaders on complex and sensitive people matters, providing trusted advice that balances organisational priorities with workforce needs. Drawing on data, insights and experience, you identify opportunities to improve capability, performance and culture, and translate those insights into meaningful action. You thrive in environments of change, bringing people together around a clear vision, setting high standards, and creating the conditions for teams and leaders to succeed.

You Belong Here

Here, every role has purpose.

Whether you’re delivering frontline legal services or strengthening our organisation from behind the scenes, you’ll help create fairer outcomes for the people across NSW.

We’re building a workplace where every culture, identity, ability and voice are included and valued. We welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with visible and invisible disability, culturally diverse communities, and LGBTQI+ communities so you can connect and flourish at every stage of career.

You will be part of a diverse and inclusive organisation, working alongside like-minded and values driven people dedicated to justice, community impact, and delivering exceptional support and service through cross collaboration.
