Job summary

ACT Government in Canberra is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor to lead the Field Maintenance Team within Delivery – Places and Spaces. This hands-on role combines leadership with active field work and administration to ensure reliable outdoor services across ACT properties and assets.

You will balance supervising duties with practical field tasks, coordinate contractors, and uphold safety and quality standards in diverse environments.

Qualifications

  • Asbestos awareness card or willingness to obtain before commencement.
  • MR licence and/or related certificates desirable.
  • Certificates/tickets in Traffic Control, Working at Heights or Confined Space recommended.

Maintenance Supervisor Full-time Permanent

Details: We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Officer to join our Field Maintenance Team within Delivery – Places and Spaces.

This is a hands‑on leadership position. The successful applicant will be responsible for both leading and managing the team and actively undertaking field‑based work alongside team members.

The role has a dual focus, with dedicated hours provided to undertake administrative, coordination and leadership responsibilities, while the remainder of the role is spent working alongside the team to deliver services in the field. This is a physically active and operational position and requires someone who is comfortable working outdoors and undertaking the physical requirements of the team's activities.

The Field Maintenance Team provides a range of services across ACT Government properties and assets, including general maintenance, installation and removal of flags and banners, and maintenance of non‑building assets such as landscaping, fountains and memorials.

What you will do

As the Senior Officer, you will:

  • Lead, coordinate and support the Field Maintenance Team in the delivery of day‑to‑day works.
  • Actively work alongside the team to undertake field‑based and physically demanding tasks.
  • Allocate and prioritise work and monitor the team's workload and performance.
  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership, guidance and support to team members.
  • Undertake administrative and coordination responsibilities associated with managing the team.
  • Liaise with managers, stakeholders and contractors to coordinate works and resolve operational issues.
  • Ensure work is undertaken safely, efficiently and to an appropriate standard.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the team's work practices, service delivery and outcomes.

About the team

The Field Maintenance Team supports Delivery – Places and Spaces by providing practical maintenance services across ACT Government properties and non‑building assets. The team responds to a range of planned and reactive requirements and works across a variety of locations and environments.

The successful applicant will play an important role in ensuring the team is well coordinated, supported and able to deliver its work effectively.

About you

We are looking for someone who can confidently balancehands‑on operational work with leadership and team management.

You will be practical, organised and adaptable, with the ability to work as part of a team while also providing direction, making decisions and managing competing priorities.

This role is not a desk‑based supervisory position. Applicants should be prepared to actively participate in the team's physical and operational work while also undertaking the leadership and administrative responsibilities of the Senior Officer role.

You will also demonstrate the ACTPS valuesofrespect, integrity, collaboration and innovation, and the associated signature behaviours.

Eligibility/Other requirements: This position requires:

  • Asbestos awareness card or a willingness to obtain - Asbestos Awareness Training and evidence of completion delivered by a Registered Training Organisation is required before commencement, for further information refer to:Asbestos Awareness Training - WorkSafe ACT

Qualification/s in the following are highly desirable MR licence, experience in landscaping or gardening maintenance, Certificate/Tickets in Traffic Control, Working at Heights, Working in Confined Space, or the ability to obtain these are desirable

Notes: A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.

This position is based in an activity‑based working (ABW) environment. Under ABW arrangements, officers will not have a designated workstation/desk.

Applicants should note that a Joint Selection Committee (JSC) established in accordance with the collective/enterprise agreement provisions will assess all applications for this position.

Note: Under the ACTPS employment framework you may be placed in another role where required for the efficient administration of the service.
