Job summary

Compass Group Pty Limited is seeking a dedicated Lifeguard to support Defence facilities at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville. The role oversees gym and pool operations, ensuring safety, compliance, and a welcoming environment for Defence personnel.

The position is part-time with a rate of AU$29/hour plus super. Requires Certificate III/IV in Fitness, Lifeguard Award, and First Aid/CPR, plus citizenship and security clearances for Defence work.

Qualifications

• 3+ years’ experience in fitness/aquatic/recreation or supervisory role
• Certificate III or IV in Fitness (essential for gym-based roles)
• Current Lifeguard Award (for aquatic roles)
• Level 1 First Aid & CPR with ability to administer oxygen
• Experience managing staff rosters, attendance and performance
• Friendly, reliable, and professional with strong communications skills
• Comfortable in structured, high‑compliance Defence environments
• Current Australian Driver’s Licence and reliable transport
• Australian Citizenship is mandatory (Defence security clearance)
• Ability to obtain and maintain National Police Check and Defence clearance

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily gym and pool operations, ensuring safety, water quality and legislative compliance
• Supervise facility users and maintain emergency response readiness
• Conduct inspections, maintain compliance records and enforce safety procedures
• Support fitness and aquatic facility compliance standards
• Deliver customer service, inductions and keep facilities clean and safe

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Lifeguard to join our team supporting the Australian Defence Force through our ESS business. You'll play a vital role in maintaining a safe, compliant, and welcoming aquatic and recreation environment, ensuring Defence personnel can enjoy fitness and leisure facilities with confidence.

Role location:

• Lavarack Barracks

Your responsibilities will include:

• Oversee daily gym and pool operations, ensuring compliance with safety, water quality, and legislative requirements.
• Supervise facility users and maintain emergency response readiness, including lifeguard coverage.
• Conduct inspections, maintain compliance records, and enforce safety procedures.
• Support fitness and aquatic facility compliance standards.
• Deliver customer service, conduct inductions, and maintain clean, safe, and well-maintained facilities.
• Respond to emergencies, report incidents, and promote a culture of safety, wellbeing, teamwork, and professionalism.

What we are looking for:

• 3+ years’ experience in a fitness, aquatic, recreation, or supervisory role (for Sport & Recreation positions)
• Certificate III or IV in Fitness (essential for gym-based roles)
• Current Lifeguard Award (for aquatic roles)
• Level 1 First Aid & CPR, with ability to administer oxygen
• Experience managing staff rosters, attendance, and performance (where applicable)
• Friendly, reliable, and professional withstrong communicationskills
• Comfortable working in structured, high-compliance Defence environments
• Current Australian Driver’s Licence and reliable transport (some sites may require travel)
• Strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and operational excellence
