Job description

Here at Investa, we’re all about creating spaces that reflect how people work, live, and thrive today—and how they’ll want to do so in the future. For over 20 years, we’ve led the way in making positive change in Australia’s workplaces. We’re an Australian diversified real estate company with a recognised track record of investment and development across both office and living markets. Our purpose is to welcome the world to better places. We’re people first and entrepreneurial, with a strong service ethos.

Why join us?

We’ve made it our business to understand how people want to live and work today, tomorrow and beyond and, as you’d expect, we practise what we preach in our own workplace as well. We’re known for our supportive, inclusive and flexible work culture. With recognition from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, the Australian Workplace Equality Index, and multiple awards for workplace flexibility, our people and the way we work together are our difference.

We’re looking for a commercially minded and solutions-focused Legal Counsel to join our Legal, Governance & Risk team, based in Sydney. This is an opportunity to partner with stakeholders across Investa, providing practical legal advice on a broad range of matters spanning property, funds management and investment management. You’ll work closely with senior leaders on significant transactions and strategic initiatives, helping the business navigate legal risk while achieving its commercial objectives.

Your key responsibilities:
  • Provide practical, commercially sound legal advice to business units across Investa, balancing legal risk with business priorities.
  • Support the Chief Legal & Risk Officer and Group Legal Counsel on a broad range of legal matters, with a focus on property, funds and investment management.
  • Advise on significant transactions, including acquisitions, corporate transactions, developments, capital raisings and debt funding.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a range of commercial agreements, including investment management agreements, property management agreements, joint venture arrangements and funding documentation.
  • Manage legal matters relating to wholesale and private equity real estate investment vehicles, assets, trusts and registered schemes.
  • Support corporate governance, regulatory compliance and risk management, helping embed a strong culture of compliance across the business.
  • Work with external legal advisers on complex, material or specialised matters, ensuring advice is practical and aligned with Investa’s commercial objectives.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels, providing guidance on transactional best practice and emerging legal, regulatory and industry developments.
  • Contribute to the development of legal knowledge across the business through training, guidance and knowledge sharing.
What you bring:
  • A Bachelor of Laws or equivalent qualification and a current Australian practising certificate.
  • At least five years' post-qualification experience, gained in a reputable private practice law firm or an in-house legal team.
  • Demonstrated experience in property or real estate law is essential, ideally within a real estate funds management, property investment or investment management business.
  • Strong technical expertise across transactional, funds management and regulatory matters, with a sound understanding of compliance and risk management frameworks.
  • Experience in property transactions, developments, funds structuring, fundraising or large-scale M&A transactions will be highly regarded.
  • Commercial acumen and sound judgement, with the ability to provide practical legal advice that supports business objectives while managing risk.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to engage with senior leaders and explain complex legal issues in a clear, practical way.
  • A proactive, agile and solutions-focused approach, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, solve problems and influence outcomes.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities while delivering quality outcomes.
  • A collaborative mindset and a genuine interest in contributing to a supportive, high-performing team and a positive culture across the business.
What we offer:
  • Career Development: Leadership programs, education assistance, study support and professional membership fee support.
  • Lifestyle: Generous parental leave, return to work program and summer hours.
  • Inclusive Culture: A safe, welcoming environment for all, including individuals from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the LGBTQ+ community and those who are neurodivergent.
  • Flexibility: We do our best to support you to be able to do the things that are important to you. We offer over 21 formal flexible work options, plus a truly supportive approach to balancing work with life’s priorities.
  • Health and Wellness: Discounted health insurance, free health and wellbeing services, discounted fitness classes and reproductive health benefits.
