Job summary

The University of Western Australia invites applications for an academic role in Indigenous Media and Communication within the School of Social Sciences. This tenurable, full-time appointment will center Indigenous perspectives in teaching, research and public engagement.

Ideally, candidates will have a PhD (or progress) in Media and Communication, an established record in teaching and a developing or proven research program with partnerships to communities and industry.

The School of Social Sciences offers a vibrant teaching and research environment spanning social and environmental studies. Within the School, Media and Communication is a dynamic discipline with strengths in digital media, journalism, media production, storytelling, strategic communication and community engagement.

This role will play a critical part in strengthening Indigenous-led perspectives across teaching, research and public engagement while contributing to the University's commitment to Indigenous knowledge, excellence and self-determination.

About the opportunity

• Design and deliver high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching that centres Indigenous perspectives on media representation, storytelling, communication ethics and public communication.
• Develop an impactful research profile in Indigenous Media and Communication, producing high-quality publications, building collaborative partnerships, securing research funding and contributing to research excellence.
• Lead and contribute to curriculum innovation across areas such as digital media, journalism, media production, documentary, audio content production, strategic communication, community engagement and Indigenous media practice.

About you

• PhD, or substantial progress towards a PhD, in Media and Communication or a related discipline, or equivalent professional qualifications and expertise.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging, inclusive and innovative teaching, curriculum design and assessment in higher education.
• Emerging or established research track record evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and a demonstrated capacity to build a competitive research program.
• Experience developing partnerships and engaging with communities, industry, government or professional networks to generate meaningful research, education or public impact.
• Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with a commitment to Indigenous knowledge, equity, inclusion, student success and collegial contribution within a university environment.
