Job summary

DWS is seeking a Lead PL/I Design and Development Consultant to provide technical leadership in a mature mainframe environment. You will lead analysis, design, and hands-on PL/I work on complex components, ensuring quality and delivery across the enterprise architecture.

The role demands deep PL/I expertise, strong debugging, and collaboration with an experienced development team. Hybrid arrangement, 2+ days onsite in Melbourne, with ACN/Max Term contract terms.

Qualifications

• Extensive PL/I enterprise app experience on IBM mainframes.
• Experience delivering PL/I development, migration, remediation or modernisation initiatives.
• Hands-on involvement across design, detailed technical design, build, testing, implementation, troubleshooting and tuning.
• Deep knowledge of VSAM file structures, access patterns, performance, concurrency and recoverability.
• Deep knowledge of IBM MQ including application integration, message processing and diagnostics.
• Ability to understand and modify large, complex legacy applications safely.
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving capability across online, batch, data-access and integration processing.
• Experience providing hands-on technical leadership, design assurance and code review within a team.
• Ability to work hands-on within an experienced team.
• Strong written and verbal communication for designs and implementation guidance.
• Good working knowledge of Db2.
• Experience with CICS and high-volume mainframe transactions.
• Experience in banking, insurance or regulated industries.
• Experience with complex financial calculations, batch processing, reconciliation and regulatory processing.
• Experience migrating PL/I apps to remove legacy DB dependencies.
• Familiarity with mainframe performance-monitoring, debugging and diagnostics toolsets.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical analysis and detailed design of complex PL/I application changes.
• Establish practical design and development approaches for key solution initiatives.
• Undertake hands-on development of complex PL/I components.
• Analyse large and complex existing PL/I codebases, including online, batch and integration processing.
• Lead troubleshooting, root-cause analysis and performance tuning activities.
• Review designs and code produced by the development team.
• Identify technical risks and implementation issues.
• Collaborate with developers to resolve engineering problems.
• Support estimation, planning, testing and production-readiness activities.
• Strengthen team capability through knowledge transfer and leadership.
