Job summary

Macquarie Group is seeking a Technical Lead Engineer to guide the design, delivery and operation of cloud-native Java applications across the Wealth Platform. You will own end-to-end delivery, from architecture through production, while mentoring engineers and maintaining platform reliability.

You will work closely with product managers and analysts, drive engineering excellence, and contribute to on-call incident management in a hybrid, Australia-wide environment.

Qualifications

• Design and deliver Java-based cloud applications with Spring Boot and relational databases.
• Build cloud-native solutions and distributed systems using modern engineering practices.
• Familiar with AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code or GitHub Copilot.
• Understand microservices, SOA, and scalable, resilient architectures.
• Deliver high-performing, maintainable systems in complex environments.

What role will you play?

As a Technical Lead Engineer, you will guide the technical execution and delivery of projects and strategic initiatives across the Wealth Platform. You will own delivery outcomes end-to-end, from architecture and design decisions through to production deployment and operational reliability. Working closely with engineers, product managers and business analysts, you will shape priorities, manage dependencies and risks, and ensure the delivery of scalable, high-performing and maintainable solutions.

You will lead technical design decisions and remain hands‑on with coding for critical platform components and proof of concepts, while driving engineering excellence across the team. You will take ownership of platform reliability, including key risk indicators (KRIs), service level objectives (SLOs), incident management and root cause analysis. As a senior technical leader, you will mentor engineers through coaching, regular feedback and knowledge sharing, helping develop capability across the team. You will also act as a trusted technical voice with stakeholders and participate in the team’s on‑call rotation as a senior escalation point.

What You Offer

• Strong experience designing, building and delivering Java‑based cloud applications, with deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot and relational databases.
• Hands‑on experience building cloud‑native solutions and distributed systems using modern engineering practices.
• Experience using AI‑assisted and agentic development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI or similar.
• Strong understanding of microservices and service‑oriented architectures, with the ability to design scalable and resilient solutions.
• Proven ability to deliver high‑performing, maintainable and well‑architected systems in complex environments.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across engineering, product and business teams.
• A proactive and collaborative mindset, with a passion for innovation, continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
• Experience mentoring and developing engineers through coaching, feedback and knowledge sharing.
• Strong knowledge of modern engineering technologies and practices, including cloud platforms (AWS and/or GCP), containers, APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases, event streaming, TDD, Continuous Delivery and Site Reliability Engineering.
• Understanding of security, privacy, regulatory requirements and technology lifecycle management, with experience in Banking and Financial Services being highly regarded.
