Job summary

UGL Pty Limited is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer, Primary Systems, to join the Utilities engineering team in North Sydney. You will lead conceptual and detailed primary design for HV substations, transmission, BESS, solar and wind projects, directing teams and coordinating interfaces with project, tendering and construction colleagues.

You will provide technical direction, ensure design outputs meet safety, quality, schedule and budget requirements, and collaborate with major utility

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• At least eight years’ experience in the primary design of HV plants or substations.
• Proven experience leading primary substation design packages across major utility, mining or renewable energy projects.
• Experience with clients such as Transgrid or Powerlink, and large-scale BESS, solar or wind farm developments.
• Strong technical capability in HV cable design, earthing, lightning protection, insulation coordination, EMF and lighting design.
• Professional knowledge of primary design software such as CYMCAP and CDEGS, with Chartered status preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead primary design packages and coordinate engineering deliverables across tender and project phases.
• Develop and review substation configurations, plant layouts, busbar systems, electrical clearances, underground services and equipment specifications.
• Undertake or oversee HV cable, earthing, lightning protection, insulation coordination, EMF, corona and lighting design.
• Check and verify engineering work for technical accuracy, compliance, constructability and interface coordination.
• Plan and monitor design activities against delivery schedules, budgets and project priorities.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, designers and drafting personnel.
• Support customer and site visits, procurement, construction, commissioning, tendering and technical evaluations as required.
