Job summary

McCabes Lawyers is seeking a Lawyer in General Lines – Institutional Torts to join our team in Sydney. You will handle defendant institutional torts matters, advising clients and defending cases from inception to resolution.

The role offers exposure to both private and public sector work within a supportive, mentoring environment. You will manage a busy caseload, conduct research, draft pleadings, and collaborate with senior lawyers to implement effective defence strategies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Laws and NSW practising certificate required.
• Minimum 1 year PAE in general insurance matters.
• Strong knowledge of Australian tort law and civil procedure.
• Confident in dealing directly with clients.
• Ability to work autonomously and within a team.
• Ability to communicate with experts in multiple fields.
• Initiative, dedication and organisation with a client and commercial focus.
• Ability to manage a busy workload and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of defendant institutional torts claims from inception to resolution with supervision.
• Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and prepare legal documents.
• Analyse complex legal issues, review materials, gather evidence, assess liability and damages.
• Collaborate with senior lawyers to develop and execute defence strategies.
• Attend negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings.
• Provide ongoing legal advice to clients throughout litigation.
• Maintain up-to-date case files and ensure compliance with service standards.
• Stay updated on relevant legal developments affecting institutional torts.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a passionate litigator with 1 – 3 years PAEto join our general insurance team on a full-time basis. As alawyer specialising in defendant institutional torts claims, youwill play a crucial role in providing legal support andrepresentation to our clients.

You Will be responsible for managing a variety of casesinvolving institutional torts allegations, working with defendantsand their legal teams to develop effective defence strategies andensure the best possible outcomes for our clients.

Your main responsibilities will include:

• Manage a caseload of defendant institutional torts claimsfrom inception to resolution with adequate supervision.
• Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and preparevarious legal documents.
• Analyse complex legal issues, review case material, gatherevidence, and assess liability and damages.
• Collaborate with senior lawyers to develop and executedefence strategies.
• Attend negotiations, mediations, and courtproceedings.
• Provide ongoing legal advice and guidance to clientsthroughout the litigation process.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files, ensuringcompliance with client service standards.
• Stay up to date of relevant legal developments and changesin legislation pertaining to institutional torts claims.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will have:

• A Bachelor of Laws or equivalent and a current New SouthWales practising certificate.
• Minimum 1 years' post admission experience in generalinsurance matters.
• Strong knowledge of Australian tort law, civil procedure,and relevant legislation.
• Confidence to deal directly with clients.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as partof a team.
• Ability to communicate effectively with experts in multiplefields.
• High degree of initiative, dedication and organisationability with a strong client and commercial focus.
• Ability to manage a busy workload and work to tightdeadlines.
• A commercial approach and ability to articulate andnegotiate effectively; and
