Job summary

SJM Rail Signalling is expanding its field teams and seeks Labourers for on-site work across NSW. The role involves trenching, cable hauling, conduit work, and site clean-up, with travel and potential night/weekend shifts.

You will support trades and operators while ensuring safety and PPE compliance. Ideal applicants have a White Card, at least 2 years’ rail or civil labouring experience, an NSW driver’s licence, and a current RIW card.

Qualifications

• White Card (General Construction Induction) required.
• Minimum 2 years labouring on rail or civil construction projects.
• Current Rail Industry Worker (RIW) card.
• Valid NSW driver’s licence and reliable transport.
• Confined space, traffic control, or First Aid certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual labour including trenching, cable hauling, pit and pipe work, and backfilling.
• Support site setup and pack-down, including barricading and signage.
• Load, move, and manage materials and equipment on site.
• Maintain a clean, organised, and hazard-free worksite at all times.
• Follow site safety procedures and wear PPE as required.
• Participate in daily pre-starts, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.
• Assist trades, plant operators, and traffic management crews as needed.
• Ensure tools and equipment are properly handled, secured, and maintained.

SJM Rail Signalling is a specialist provider of rail signalling and civil construction services, delivering complex infrastructure solutions to government and private clients. Known for our quality, safety, and reliable project delivery, we’re expanding our team and looking for skilled and motivated Labourers.

This is a hands-on role that involves a variety of general site tasks, including trenching, cable hauling, conduit work, and site clean-up. You’ll work closely with supervisors and trades to support works across multiple rail networks and civil construction zones. The work is physical, fast-paced, and requires flexibility to travel and work on night/weekend shifts where required.

What We’re Looking For:

• White Card (General Construction Induction)
• Minimum 2 years of labouring experience on rail or civil construction projects
• Valid NSW driver’s licence and reliable transport
• Current Rail Industry Worker (RIW) card
• Proven ability to follow direction and work in a team
• Physical fitness and strong work ethic
• Familiarity with safe work practices, hazard identification, and PPE use
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, and small plant
• Experience working in live rail or brownfield environments
• Confined space, traffic control, or First Aid certification
• MR or HR truck licence
• Exposure to environmental controls and underground service works
• Forklift or EWP licence
