Job summary

Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney seeks a Technician to deliver high-quality histology and blood processing for internal researchers and external collaborators.

Reporting to the Histopathology & Biospecimen Manager, you will handle blood samples, tissue processing, embedding, staining, microtomy and immunohistochemistry, with meticulous data recording in a collaborative team.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Process blood samples from biobanks and clinical trials.
  • Perform histology duties: reception, tissue processing, embedding, staining, microtomy, immunohistochemistry.
  • Prepare and label samples meticulously.
  • Aliquot and snap-freeze blood samples.
  • Maintain equipment and record keeping.
  • Contribute to SOP drafting and support research projects.

Job description

Integral to Garvan, are its Scientific support services and biobanks which contain tissue and blood samples from research projects and consented participants. The Technician is to provide high quality histology and blood processing services, both to researchers within the St Vincent’s Health Innovation Precinct and external collaborators.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Histopathology & Biospecimen Manager, the Technician will be responsible for processing blood samples and performing general histology duties in a team and collaborative environment. Salary: $58,000 + 12% super + salary packaging Employment Type: 2 year contract, with high possibility of extension

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Processing of blood samples collected as part of the biobanks and clinical trials
  • Performing general histology such as specimen reception, tissue processing and embedding, staining, microtomy, and immunohistochemistry
  • The meticulous preparation and labelling of samples
  • Aliquoting and snap freezing of the blood samples
  • Handling and maintenance of lab equipment
  • All general lab duties
  • Strict adherence to Study Protocols
  • Record Keeping
  • Data entry and ensuring its accuracy onto a database
  • Contributing to the writing of standard operating procedures and other manuals
  • Assistance with research projects
  • Assisting other Garvan facilities/labs if required
  • Participating in training team and Precinct staff
  • Working closely and effectively with small teams, planning and prioritising work to meet all commitments
ABOUT YOU
  • TAFE or university degree in science, applied science, health or a health related discipline
  • Understanding of good laboratory practice guidelines
  • Excellent computer and communication skills
  • A strong commitment to quality and detail
  • Demonstrate ability to work with limited supervision
  • Ability to work in a team/collaborative environment
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and deadlines
