Job summary

The Law Society of New South Wales is Australia’s largest membership body for solicitors. It seeks a full-time Investigations Solicitor to join the Legal Regulation team, based in Sydney CBD with hybrid working.

You will conduct investigations of complaints about lawyers, examine suitability issues, and provide well-reasoned recommendations to the Director and the Council. You will manage a mix of complex matters, draft notices and memoranda, and liaise with multiple stakeholders while upholding

Qualifications

• Admission to the Roll of Lawyers and eligible to hold practising certificate.
• Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience.
• Experience in investigatory, regulatory or administrative law is desirable.
• Sound knowledge of Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) and related legislation.
• Strong understanding of solicitor trust accounting practice.
• Excellent written communication and reporting skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct investigations of complaints about lawyers under Chapter 5 promptly and fairly.
• Examine suitability issues related to a lawyer's fitness to hold a practising certificate under Chapter 3.
• Review trust investigation reports and make recommendations.
• Manage a mix of complex matters including complaints and suitability issues.
• Identify key conduct issues and determine additional evidence required.
• Draft statutory notices and conduct legal research.
• Provide timely reports and recommendations to the Professional Conduct Committee.
• Ensure compliance with the Uniform Law.
• Draft memoranda to Council on suitability issues.
• Liaise with complainants, solicitors, committees and regulators.
• Contribute to policy and educational goals of the Department.
• Maintain high ethical standards and practice excellence.
