Job summary

Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland is hiring an Inspector (Roadworks) to inspect roadworks and transport projects in Cairns, Townsville and surrounding districts. You will monitor contractor performance and support safe, high-quality and cost-effective outcomes for communities.

The role covers inspecting new construction, routine and rehabilitation works, third-party road works, and assisting with disaster events. Strong focus on compliance, records, and project progress.

Qualifications

  • Current Class C driver license.
  • Must be eligible to work in Australia.
  • A criminal history check and serious disciplinary action declaration will be undertaken prior to appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strong understanding of contract requirements, contractor construction methods, planned works sequencing and surveillance plans.
  • Provide technical support and input to support effective outcomes across sole invitee, local government and open contracts.
  • Conduct surveillance inspections of contractor work, processes, temporary traffic management, quality, environmental controls and safety to ensure compliance with specifications, legislation and contract conditions.
  • Maintain detailed records, including diaries, test results, photos and reports, and provide regular advice on contractor performance and project progress.
  • Independently identify road infrastructure hazards and defects, investigate public complaints and requests, and provide advice on prioritisation and remediation treatments.
  • Participate in contractual meetings, disaster preparedness and training, Public Utility Plant investigation and relocation activities, and the Roadworks Inspector Career Development Program.

Job description

Bring your roadworks inspection experience to permanent opportunities with Transport and Main Roads, with positions based in Cairns, Far North District, and Townsville, Northern District, supporting the delivery and maintenance of vital transport infrastructure across North Queensland.

As Inspector (Roadworks), you will play a hands-on role in inspecting roadworks and transport infrastructure projects, monitoring contractor performance and helping achieve safe, high-quality and cost-effective outcomes for Queensland communities.

In the role of Inspector (Roadworks) you will inspect new construction works, routine, programmed, rehabilitation and reactive maintenance contracts, third party road corridor works such as public utility plant and developer works and support the management of critical incident and declared disaster events, ensuring delivery of high standards of quality, economy, governance, and safety are achieved.

Some Of Your Responsibilities Will Include

Mandatory Qualifications And Conditions
  • Current 'Class C' driver license
  • Must be eligible to work in Australia.
  • Due to this role having access to sensitive data, a criminal history check and serious disciplinary action declaration will be undertaken prior to appointment to the role.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Possession of a Certificate III in Civil Construction
  • Possession of a WHS White Card (General Construction induction)
