Job summary

Queensland Fire Department – Rockhampton QLD is seeking a Bushfire Mitigation Officer [First Nations] to provide operational and cultural expertise to support mitigation planning, implementation, and evaluation across districts. You will work with Traditional Owners, their communities, volunteers, brigades, and rangers to deliver tailored fire management and engagement.

Qualifications

• Must provide a letter of provenance confirming Aboriginality/ Torres Strait Islander descent.
• Must meet the mandatory requirements and attributes in the RFOO2 role description.

Responsibilities

• Utilise Indigenous cultural fire management and traditional burning practices to support governance and biodiversity.
• Lead community education in bushfire prevention and preparedness with brigades and communities.
• Develop, implement and evaluate initiatives to support Indigenous fire knowledge and practices.
• Support statewide coordination of bushfire mitigation activities with Traditional Owners, rangers, brigades and partners.
• Assist in plans and strategies to reduce bushfire risk focusing on First Nations identified values.
• Undertake Fire Warden role where needed and after training.
• Monitor and evaluate bushfire risk, fuel loads and mitigation strategy delivery.
• Oversee data collection on environmental conditions to enhance risk analysis.
• Support Locality Specific and Area Fire Management Group meetings and related committees.
