About The Project

John Holland in partnership with McConnell Dowell (Joint Venture) are delivering the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project in Far North Queensland. This is an innovative project that involves the world-first conversion of a disused gold mine into a pumped storage hydroelectric power generation facility in far-north Queensland (270km NW of Townsville).

The project will see the conversion of two existing mine pits into reservoirs, involving the construction of significant underground infrastructure including a large powerhouse cavern and waterway shafts and tunnels to allow the transfer of water between upper and lower reservoirs to generate power during peak periods and return water back to the upper reservoir during off peak periods.

This project received funding from ARENA as part of ARENA's Advancing Renewables Program and is a gamechanger for the clean energy industry worldwide as it is an entirely new approach to large-scale energy storage.

Key Duties And Requirements

The HVSC will be responsible for managing complex switching sequences, overseeing permit applications, and planning future maintenance and commissioning activities.

• Select and certify the HVSC candidate, ensuring requisite licenses and experience
• Conduct a detailed briefing on project scope, switching procedures, and safety protocols
• Review all operational documentation, switching schedules, and permit requirements
• On-site induction, familiarization with site-specific switching diagrams and safety controls
• Initiate planning for upcoming switching activities, including future maintenance and commissioning schedules
• Coordinate with control room operators and other stakeholders for seamless integration
• Conduct simulated switching exercises and review permit application processes
• Establish communication channels and emergency response procedures
• Finalize all documentation, permits, and operational plans
• Confirm operational readiness and transition to active management of high voltage switching activities
