Job summary

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney is seeking a Hospital Scientist specialized in cytology to screen and report gynecological and non-gynecological specimens. The role includes ROSE for FNA and collaboration with Pathologists to ensure high-quality results.

The successful applicant will contribute to continuous quality improvement, participate in audits and staff training, and work within a dynamic, patient-centered team at SydPath in Darlinghurst.

Qualifications

  • Current Cytology Certificate (CT(ASC)) with hands-on cytology experience.
  • Strong knowledge of cytology screening, reporting, and triage processes.
  • Understanding of laboratory quality systems and accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Screen and report gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens.
  • Perform ROSE for FNA, including EBUS/EUS procedures, with timely results.
  • Ensure quality and accuracy across specimen processing and reporting.
  • Contribute to audits, validation of new technologies, and service development.
  • Collaborate with Pathologists and clinicians; assist in training staff.

About the role
  • Bring your cytology expertise to life by screening and reporting gynaecological and non-gynaecological specimens, including cervical cytology, within your scope of practice.
  • Make an impact at the point of diagnosis by performing Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) for FNA, including EBUS and EUS procedures, supporting clinicians with timely and accurate results.
  • Own quality and accuracy across specimen processing, screening, reporting and laboratory information systems, while consistently meeting turnaround times and KPIs.
  • Be a driver of continuous improvement by contributing to quality assurance, audits, accreditation, research, validation of new technologies and service development initiatives.
  • Share your expertise and thrive in a collaborative team by working closely with Pathologists, clinicians and laboratory staff, supporting the training of colleagues and students, and contributing to a positive learning environment.
About you
  • Cytology expertise and credentials – a current Cytology Certificate (CT(ASC)) with hands‑on experience and strong theoretical and practical knowledge of cytotechnology.
  • Strong diagnostic capability – proven experience preparing, screening, triaging and reporting gynaecological and non‑gynaecological cytology specimens, with confidence working within scope of practice.
  • A quality‑focused mindset – solid knowledge of laboratory quality systems, accreditation requirements, regulatory standards and safe work practices, with a commitment to maintaining high diagnostic standards.
  • Excellent organisation and attention to detail – the ability to manage competing priorities, stay focused, meet turnaround times and deliver accurate work in a fast‑paced laboratory environment.
  • A collaborative and professional approach – strong communication and report‑writing skills, with the ability to work effectively with Pathologists, clinicians and laboratory teams, while contributing to continuous learning and service improvement.
