Job summary

Chatham High School in Taree seeks an energetic Head Teacher Welfare to lead student wellbeing and engagement across a diverse school community. The role requires experience in wellbeing programs, collaboration with pastoral care teams, and a commitment to inclusive practices for Aboriginal students.

You will work with Year Advisers, Attendance Officers, and external agencies to design and evaluate initiatives.

Job description

Head Teacher Welfare – Chatham High School

Chatham High School is a large welcoming comprehensive high school that services the town of Taree and adjacent rural and coastal areas with an enrolment of approximately 550 students. The school is seeking an energetic leader with demonstrated expertise in supporting student growth and engagement.

Approximately 50% of students enrolled at Chatham High School are of Aboriginal descent and the school enjoys a close connection to the local community through a wide variety of cultural programs. The school has a mix of experienced and early career teaching, support, administrative and executive staff, noted for their caring attitude and commitment to high expectations for all students.

A broad academic and vocational curriculum is supported by diverse cultural and extra curricula programs offered by the school to enhance student retention and attainment. These include CHACE, a Curriculum Extension program in stage four, a Talented Athlete Program (TAP) and a well-resourced and staffed Senior Support Centre for stage six students. Student success is underpinned by strong staff commitment to working in teams to support classes and individual students. Student leadership is an active and valued aspect of school life and enhances the increasingly positive perception of the school in the community.

General Selection Criteria

• Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
• Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
• Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
• Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
• Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
• Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

Specific Selection Criteria

Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria,

• Demonstrated capacity to lead a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to student wellbeing and engagement, including the effective leadership of Year Advisers, Student Support Officers and other pastoral care roles, in partnership with the Learning Support Team, Aboriginal Education Team and school executive.
• Demonstrated capacity to lead complex student support and case-management processes, including coordinated responses to wellbeing, attendance, engagement, safeguarding concerns and other barriers to learning.
• Demonstrated ability to lead culturally responsive and inclusive whole school practices that strengthen engagement, belonging and outcomes for Aboriginal students and other priority equity groups, including building strong relationships with students and families and coordinating wraparound support with external agencies.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate evidence-informed wellbeing and engagement initiatives, using student voice and school and system data to measure impact, refine practice and contribute to whole-school improvement.
