Job description

Blue Mountains Grammar School is seeking an accomplished Mathematics educator to lead a capable and committed faculty. We are looking for someone with strong disciplinary knowledge, a record of excellent classroom practice and a genuine desire to help every student experience growth and success in Mathematics.

This opportunity may suit an experienced Head of Mathematics seeking a new context in which to lead. Equally, we are interested in speaking with highly capable and innovative Mathematics teachers who are ready to step into significant departmental leadership for the first time.

We are less concerned with the title you currently hold than with the quality of your teaching, your capacity to influence others and your readiness to take responsibility for the academic, professional and relational work of leading a department.

The opportunity

The Head of Mathematics will provide clear academic and operational leadership across Years 7 to 12. The position will commence in Term 1 2027. The role includes responsibility for curriculum quality, innovative and high-quality teaching practice, assessment, student achievement, staff development, and the effective day-to-day operation of the Mathematics Department.

The successful candidate will respect what strong Mathematics education has always done well. Students need explicit teaching, secure foundational knowledge, mathematical fluency, careful practice and appropriately high expectations. They also need confidence, curiosity and opportunities to use mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar and meaningful contexts.

At BMGS, we do not see academic rigour and future-focused learning as competing priorities. Our Deeper Learning framework, Design Thinking, and project-based learning are all intended to strengthen students’ understanding and application of knowledge, not to replace the disciplined teaching upon which that understanding depends.

This is not a call to discard what works, nor is it a role for someone who wants to double down on how school has always been. We are looking for a leader with the judgement to preserve strong practice, address areas for improvement, and help the department and the wider BMGS faculty consider what excellent Mathematics education could become.

Mathematics for every student

We want students to understand that Mathematics is not reserved for a particular kind of learner. It is a way of thinking, reasoning, recognising patterns and making sense of the world.

The Head of Mathematics will lead a culture in which high expectations apply to every student. This means providing timely support for those who find Mathematics difficult, building confidence without lowering the intellectual challenge and creating genuine extension for students with considerable mathematical ability.

Our aspiration is a Department in which academic achievement continues to strengthen, teachers learn from one another and students increasingly see themselves as capable mathematical thinkers.

The person we are seeking

You will be an excellent Mathematics teacher who can bring credibility, steadiness and a clear sense of direction to the role. You will understand that departmental leadership involves more than curriculum design. It requires attention to people, standards, systems, difficult conversations and the daily work of helping teachers and students flourish.

You may already be leading a Mathematics Department or holding a similar curriculum leadership position. Alternatively, you may be an experienced and highly regarded teacher who recognises that you are ready to take the next step and have the energy and courage to embrace the challenges of leading a department within a future-focused school.

You Will Be Able To
  • lead a coherent, knowledge-rich Mathematics curriculum across Years 7 to 12
  • maintain high academic expectations and strengthen student growth and HSC achievement
  • oversee curriculum compliance, assessment design, moderation, reporting and departmental processes
  • use assessment evidence and student work to identify misconceptions and improve teaching
  • support teachers to balance explicit instruction and deliberate practice with rich questioning, problem-solving and authentic application
  • create effective pathways of support, challenge and extension for a diverse range of learners
  • identify purposeful opportunities for Mathematics within deeper learning, Design Thinking and project-based learning
  • manage the practical and relational demands of leading a busy departmentdevelop teachers through feedback, coaching, collaboration and professional learning
  • build a positive faculty culture characterised by trust, consistency and shared responsibility
  • communicate clearly with students, colleagues and families
  • contribute thoughtfully to the School's broader educational direction
Qualifications And Experience

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • appropriate tertiary qualifications in Mathematics and Education
  • current NESA accreditation and a valid NSW Working with Children Check
  • substantial experience teaching Mathematics, including Stage 6 courses
  • a strong record of student growth and academic achievement
  • evidence of leadership, whether through a formal position or significant curriculum, pastoral or professional responsibilities
  • sound knowledge of contemporary Mathematics curriculum and pedagogy
  • the capacity to lead improvement with both ambition and good judgement
  • strong organisational, relational and communication capabilities
  • a commitment to the wellbeing, formation and flourishing of young people
  • a willingness to support the Christian mission and Anglican character of the School.

Experience teaching Mathematics Advanced and Extension courses would be highly regarded.
