Job summary

Tassal Group is hiring a casual Hatchery Technician at our Proserpine Prawn Hatchery in Far North Queensland. You will support breeding and growing tiger prawns, ensure broodstock health, and deliver high-quality post-larvae to our farms.

This hands-on role emphasizes sustainability and teamwork, with a flexible roster enabling work-life balance. Responsibilities include feeding, health checks, water quality testing, and meticulous record-keeping.

Qualifications

  • Aquaculture or agriculture experience is desirable but not essential; full training provided.
  • Health and fitness test required prior to starting.
  • Must have the legal right to work in Australia.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare feed and daily feeding routines for prawn growth.
  • Perform routine health checks using microscopy and visual observation.
  • Sample and test water quality using meters and probes.
  • Accurately document hatchery activities and water quality data.
  • Implement and maintain biosecurity measures, including disinfection and cleaning.
  • Monitor prawn health and behaviour and escalate concerns.

Job description

The role:

Join our team as a casual Hatchery Technician at our Proserpine Prawn Hatchery. You'll play a vital role in breeding and growing tiger prawns, ensuring the health and sustainability of our broodstocks and delivering high-quality post-larvae to our farms. This is a hands-on role that combines animal husbandry, technical skills, and a commitment to sustainability. With a flexible roster, you'll enjoy a fantastic work/life balance while contributing to a thriving aquaculture operation.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare feed and perform daily feeding routines to support optimal prawn growth.
  • Conduct routine health checks using microscopy and visual observation. Identify, diagnose, and elevate any health issues promptly.
  • Sample and test water quality using meters and probes to maintain ideal conditions for prawn growth.
  • Accurately document hatchery activities, including larval production and water quality data, using iPads and computers.
  • Implement and maintain biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks, including disinfection and cleaning of tanks and equipment.
  • Monitor prawn health and behaviour, escalating any concerns to ensure timely resolution.
Role requirements:
  • Aquaculture or agriculture experience is highly desirable but not essential. Full training will be provided.
  • This is a physically demanding role. Successful applicants will need to pass a health and fitness test prior to starting.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a passion for sustainable aquaculture.
  • A proactive, team-oriented mindset with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • The legal right to work in Australia.
