Job summary

Smiths Detection Group is seeking a Graduate Project Engineer in Sydney to support project teams from conception through to completion, gaining hands-on experience in tendering, procurement and engineering operations. You will work closely with experienced professionals, develop practical project management skills and contribute to planning, schedules and delivery across the full project lifecycle.

A completed or near‑complete Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics

Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of project management and engineering delivery.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Australian work authorisation is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in tender prep and bid documentation.
  • Support development of Project Execution Plans and schedules.
  • Contribute to full project lifecycle from initiation to closeout.
  • Monitor progress, prepare status reports and action trackers.
  • Coordinate procurement, logistics and deliveries.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, suppliers and customers for timely execution.
  • Support site surveys, risk assessments and installation activities.
  • Participate in project meetings and maintain records.
  • Travel to customer and project sites as required.

We are looking for a motivated Graduate Project Engineer to join our team and support the successful delivery of projects from conception through to completion. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, develop practical project management skills, and build a strong foundation for a long-term engineering career.

What You'll Do

As a Graduate Project Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting project teams across a variety of engineering and project management activities, including:

  • Assisting in the preparation of tenders and bids, including compliance matrices, vendor quotations, cost inputs, and technical documentation.
  • Supporting the development and execution of Project Execution Plans, project schedules, and deliverables.
  • Contributing to project activities throughout the full project lifecycle, from initiation to closeout.
  • Monitoring project progress and preparing status reports, action trackers, and project documentation.
  • Coordinating procurement activities, material deliveries, logistics, and shipment schedules.
  • Liaising with internal stakeholders, suppliers, subcontractors, and customers to ensure effective communication and timely project execution.
  • Supporting site surveys, risk assessments, implementation planning, and installation activities.
  • Assisting in the review of supplier proposals and technical submissions to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Participating in project meetings, maintaining records of actions and decisions, and supporting issue resolution.
  • Undertaking ad hoc project-related activities as required.
  • Travelling to customer and project sites when required.
