Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking an early-career engineer to join the Pacific Applied Operations team. You will support the design, selection and delivery of HVAC solutions (Chillers, AHUs and more) for data centres, commercial and mission-critical applications.

You will develop practical technical and commercial capability through exposure to equipment application, project execution and commissioning activities, while learning from senior staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and structured problem-solving capability.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with stakeholders.
  • Willingness to learn new HVAC products, technologies and tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, especially Excel; CAD/BIM exposure is advantageous.
  • Organised work style with ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with application, design and selection of applied HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Review customer specs, identify technical requirements, exclusions, risks and compliance gaps.
  • Prepare equipment selections, calculations, schedules, drawings, submittals, estimates and proposals.
  • Coordinate with Johnson Controls factories, product teams and suppliers on compliance, pricing, lead times and delivery.
  • Support project handover, design reviews, procurement inputs, document control and resolving queries.
  • Ensure engineering selections comply with customer requirements, standards and procedures.
  • Follow safety, SHEMS and site procedures.

About the opportunity:

This position is an early-career engineering role within the Pacific Applied Operations team, responsible for supporting the design, selection, estimation, documentation and delivery of applied HVAC solutions, including Chillers, Air Handling Units (AHUs) and other HVAC equipment, for data centre, commercial, industrial and mission‑critical applications. The role will develop practical technical and commercial capability through supervised exposure to equipment application, proposal development, project execution, customer support and commissioning activities.

The role will involve you learning about the below:
  • Assist with the application, design and selection of applied HVAC equipment and system solutions, including Chillers, AHUs and other HVAC equipment.
  • Review customer specifications, schedules and drawings, and identify technical requirements, exclusions, risks and compliance gaps for review.
  • Assist with the preparation of equipment selections, technical calculations, schedules, drawings, technical submittals, estimates, quotations and proposals.
  • Liaise with Johnson Controls factories, internal product teams and third‑party suppliers regarding technical compliance, special selections, pricing, lead times and delivery requirements.
  • Support project handover and execution activities, including design reviews, procurement inputs, document control and resolution of technical queries.
  • Ensure engineering selections and documentation comply with approved customer requirements, applicable standards, regulatory obligations and company procedures.
  • Comply with all Johnson Controls safety, health, environmental, quality and business conduct requirements, including SHEMS and applicable site safety procedures.
What we are looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, recently completed or nearing completion, with fundamental knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and HVAC systems.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and structured problem‑solving capability, with sound attention to detail.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong willingness and ability to learn new HVAC products, technologies, engineering tools and business systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Excel. Exposure to CAD, BIM, HVAC selection software or engineering design tools is advantageous.
  • Ability to organise work, manage competing priorities and meet agreed timeframes. Full Australian working rights are required; a current Australian driver licence is desirable where site travel is required.
