Job summary

Geoscience Australia seeks a Geoscientist to contribute to regional-scale geoscience investigations in the Georgetown–Julia Creek region. Our team

The Georgetown Julia Creek team sits within the Groundwater and Regional Geoscience Branch and is delivering one of Geoscience Australia’s major regional geoscience programs under the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative. Working in partnership with state and territory geological surveys, Australian Government agencies, universities, CSIRO and industry, the team brings together geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geochronology, mineral systems, energy systems and groundwater science to build a richer understanding of northern Australia’s resource potential.

Our work turns new data and geological insight into integrated, multi-commodity assessments that reduce exploration uncertainty, identify opportunities for critical minerals, strategic materials, energy resources and groundwater, and support more informed decisions by governments, industry and communities. By working at regional scale and across disciplines, the team helps reveal the connections between Australia’s geology, resources, water systems and future development opportunities.

The role

The Geoscientist will contribute to integrated regional-scale geoscience investigations that improve understanding of the Georgetown-Julia Creek region. Working under limited direction as part of a multidisciplinary team, the role will compile, acquire, synthesise, integrate and interpret geoscientific data to inform a baseline understanding of the geology and resource potential of the Georgetown-Julia Creek region, undertaken sampling of legacy drill core, and support the planning of data acquisition activities. The role is currently being offered as a non-ongoing position.

In this role you will:

• compile, synthesise, acquire, integrate and interpret a range of geoscientific data to inform regional-scale geological understanding and resource potential assessments
• work collaboratively with geologists, hydrogeologists, geophysicists, geochemists and other specialists to develop new geological knowledge in poorly understood and covered terranes
• support the planning and delivery of data acquisition activities, including GIS support, data management and geological interpretation
• assist with land access negotiations, cultural heritage clearances and field activities as required, including in remote and potentially challenging environments
• prepare and communicate scientific findings through maps, datasets, reports, presentations and decision-ready products for technical and non-technical audiences
• engage and collaborate with industry, government and academic stakeholders, including mineral explorers, state and territory geological surveys, universities and CSIRO.

• apply sound scientific judgement to analyse and interpret complex geological and geoscientific information
• contribute your own expertise while drawing on the knowledge and experience of others to improve work processes, scientific interpretations and product delivery
• build and maintain effective relationships with project teams, other work areas and external stakeholders
• understand, support and promote Geoscience Australia’s role, vision and objectives in delivering regional-scale precompetitive geoscience programs
• communicate clearly and tailor complex scientific information for a range of technical and non-technical audiences

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

• A tertiary qualification or equivalent industry experience in geoscience or a related field.
• Demonstrated ability to work productively in multidisciplinary teams, supported by highly developed communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
• Capability to work independently and develop self-directed work programs under limited direction from senior staff.
• Demonstrated technical skills and experience in one or more of the following: structural geology, economic geology, basin analysis, hydrogeology, geology, or geophysical interpretation.
• A commitment to fostering a positive, safe and inclusive culture in your team and workplace.
