Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Gateway Engineer to support the design, maintenance, and evolution of secure network gateway infrastructure within a large-scale government environment.
This role is suited to an infrastructure or network engineer with strong expertise across enterprise networking, security technologies, load balancing, cloud integration, and gateway services. You will work alongside highly skilled technical teams to maintain critical network capabilities, investigate security incidents, contribute to architecture decisions, and ensure the reliability and resilience of core infrastructure services.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain and support gateway infrastructure and network components in accordance with approved architectures and design standards.
- Translate logical network designs into resilient and scalable physical implementations.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of operational policies, standards, and change initiatives.
- Provide specialist technical advice and recommendations to technical leadership and senior stakeholders.
- Support the development of recovery strategies, disaster recovery processes, and contingency procedures.
- Contribute to solution design activities, including alternative architectures and network topology options.
- Identify technical and security risks within proposed solution designs and develop mitigation strategies.
- Investigate suspected cyber incidents, attacks, and network anomalies.
- Support security incident management activities and remediation efforts.
- Provide guidance on implementing physical, procedural, and technical security controls.
- Collaborate with cross-functional ICT teams to maintain a robust, secure, and resilient gateway environment.
Education/Certifications Required
The following certifications will be highly regarded:
- CCNP Enterprise or CCNP Security
- Cisco Data Centre certifications
- Palo Alto Networks certifications
- F5 Certified Technology Specialist (F5-CTS)
- Citrix Certifications
- CompTIA Security+
- Relevant Cloud Certifications (AWS, Azure, or equivalent)
Criteria
Each candidate must provide a response to each criterion. Each response is limited to 3000 characters.
Essential criteria
- Demonstrated experience in the design and deployment of network infrastructure including Cisco Data centre technologies like Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), Cisco Routers, Nexus switches, routing protocols like Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP).
- Demonstrated experience with and/or detailed understanding of Palo Alto firewalls and IPS Solutions.
- Technical proficiency in the design of services utilising F5/Blue Coat/ Citrix NetScaler/ Broadcom SWG Layer 4-7 switching/load balancing and proxy systems.
- Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of virtual private network (VPN) technologies, email and DNS (Infoblox) Solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in the design and integration of hybrid and public cloud services.
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of Australian Government information security policies, the ASD Information Security Manual and Essential Eight.
