Job summary

Mercy Health Cairns is seeking a part-time gardener to maintain outdoor spaces across Mercy Place Cairns.

You’ll perform garden bed care, pruning, planting, spraying, weeding and mulching, operate handheld and ride-on machinery, and support a compassionate care team. This role suits someone who values sustainability and reliability in a welcoming community setting.

Training and growth opportunities are provided to help you develop with Mercy.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to sustainable gardening practices.
  • Strong horticultural and garden-maintenance skills.
  • Sound knowledge of plants, turf, pests, weeds and diseases.
  • Competence in operating handheld and ride-on machinery.
  • Strong time-management, organisational and communication abilities.
  • A compassionate, flexible and positive attitude.
  • Ability to build positive, respectful relationships.
  • Previous maintenance experience; trade qualifications preferred but not essential.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain garden beds and landscape areas.
  • Prune, plant, spray, weed and mulch as required.
  • Operate garden machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Support a collaborative team and residents/clients.

To thrive in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • A commitment to sustainable gardening practices - applying environmentally responsible methods that align with organisational sustainability goals.
  • Strong horticultural and garden-maintenance skills - including maintaining garden beds, pruning, planting, spraying, weeding and mulching.
  • Sound knowledge of plants, turf, pests, weeds and diseases - enabling effective care and problem-solving across diverse garden environments.
  • Competence in operating handheld and ride-on machinery - ensuring safe and efficient use of equipment.
  • Strong time-management, organisational and communication abilities - with the capacity to adapt quickly and resolve issues effectively.
  • A compassionate, flexible and positive attitude - contributing to a respectful and supportive workplace culture.
  • Ability to build positive, respectful relationships - and actively support a collaborative team environment.
  • Previous maintenance experience - with trade qualifications preferred but not essential.
  • Capacity to work both independently and as part of a team - demonstrating initiative, reliability and accountability.

You will also be required to provide evidence of, or in the process of obtaining:

  • A current Police Record Check and Working with Children Check.
  • Current Drivers Licence
